The little Western Cutlery #628 was my first real fixed blade when I was young, and I had it until it was stolen in a car break-in when I was 27 or so, back in the late '90's.

I mention it because my seven year old daughter has lately been showing an interest in knives and has been asking for "knife lessons." I have been obliging her, of course, with carefully supervised whittling sessions punctuated with lots of safe handling instruction.

She is not ready yet to independently have and carry a knife, but I think she is nearly ready to have her own knife to use under supervision. The Western 628 seems like a great candidate, and also has some nostalgic appeal.

A SAK is another natural choice, but the folding blades may not be as safe for a beginner.

Western Cutlery fixed blades are a really nice traditional knife. These 28 patterns "Bird and Trout" is smallest of their fixed blade line-up. A great choice for a youngsters first knife, at 6 3/8" with a 3" blade, its a cute little thing. Here is a Black Beauty in the same pattern, an F28. I think these 28 patterns came out about 1950.
