Any love for us lefties out there?

I've always loved DDR's designs. And I'm really itching to buy one at some point in the near future. However the least I'd want from a knife at that price point is that I could carry it in my lefthanded pocket comfortable.

I'm not even talking about the lock. I'm fine with a righthanded framelock or linerlock. But if I could buy a Gunhammer type HTM with a lefthanded carry option I'd be all over it like white on rice!

Can I expect anything like that in the near future? Or is my only hope for a lefthanded DDR a full blown custom?

It's something you can request at the time of purchase I'm almost positive. Drilling for left hand carry should not be a problem.

I checked with them. They want $150 to make the HTM gunhammer a lefthanded carry.

I understand that tooling isn't cheap....but paying an extra 60% if a knife just to switch the pocketclip is simply too much.

Maybe in due time I'll go full on custom. But at the moment it looks like a DDR knife is out of the question for me.

There are folks here that can do that for less. I forget the names, but I'm sure you can find out here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/870-The-Custom-Shop-Services-Offered

It's ok. If a company doesn't think I'm worth their attention then I simply spend my money somewhere else.

I'm not mad or upset. That's just the way it goes.

It's a shame it didn't work out to your satisfaction. But thanks for being so civil about it.

It's weird. I'm left-handed too, but I tend to use all of my knives right-handed. Still, having the option to switch to left/right as well as tip-up/tip-down carry (like with the Spyderco Endura) would be a nice thing to have on some of HTM's workhorse knives (like the Gunhammer).

Perhaps if enough people get behind it HTM will look into finding a cost-effective way to make four-way tapping a standard production procedure.

I'm the same way, I'm a lefty and I've been carrying / opening knives right handed as long as I can remember.
I definitely don't let it stop me from buying a knife if it strikes my fancy.

Thing is Pete, there are sooo many knives....and I work hard enough for my money that it's just not worth it buying something that has a niggle that'll annoy me. I had a high quality knife that I loved EVERYTHING about......except the righthanded tip up pocketclip.

And I just couldn't keep it because I never carried it. The reversed position in my lefthand pocket made it so annoying to have to draw and flip over every time that I kep picking different knives to carry....so I sold it.

I'd hate to have to go through all that with a DDR HTM knife. Went through the same thing with a high end custom knife after that. Now I decided that it's just not worth it.

I expect that if DDR ever offers his for lefthanded carry I'm very likely to become a customer of his. But untill then....probably not.

Thanks, I'll keep checking this forum. Who knows, I might end up with a nice HTM bowie gunhammer after all.

my friend has one that is for right hand but it comes with special screws that you can take the pocket clip off and switch it to make it for a left hand person. it is a quick opener aus 8 steel .

Yeah, some brands make some of their knives with switchable pocketclips. I know Spyderco does this a lot.

A little update. I talked to Darrell at the A.G. Russell 2012 Knife Event.

He told me that there was a slight misunderstanding. The $160 quote I was given was for milling a slot similar to the one for the righthanded clips.

However he also told me he'd be able to drill and tap holes for a lefthanded clip a lot more easily though. So things are looking up and I might get me one at some time in the future after all.....not for a few months though since I spent all my $$$ at the show (you know how it goes).

I, like Maniacal Pete, have been carrying knives right handed ever since I can remember. Sometimes us lefties just gotta man man up and carry off handed to enjoy a great knife.

Heck, there are a ton of things I had to learn right handed because lefties were forgotten about. I am sad to hear it costs so much to get a GH drilled and milled for left handed carry, but I have one on order and plan on carrying it wrong handed. In fact, most of my knives I carry right handed, and just switch hands to open them, cut, close them, and then pass back to my right hand to pocket. Dumb i know, but old habits are hard to break.

Seriously? That's your philosophy? Well whatever makes you happy man. But you might want to consider reading the rest of the thread. Like my previous statement where DDR told me that it's not nearly as expensive if they don't do the ressesed milling for the pocketclip.

I suppose to be fair, a fully LH Gunny would have to have the liner lock on the other side as well, right?

I'm another lefty who's gotten used to carrying my folders righty. Leaves my LH free to reach for my fixed blade EDC. That way there's no awkwardness; I can always reach and use a knife no matter which hand is free. I can understand not wanting a RH carry if you're not used to RH knives though. Glad to hear that Darrel will be able to take care of you.

No need to take offense, it wasn't directed at you as much as it was a general statement. I did read the post above my previous statement and made note to him offering to drill without milling the scales for fit. I like to milled and flush fit look, but, I still don't mind carrying off handed as I didn't know they would even just plain drill them. I have drilled a few knives before for left handed carry, but I also don't mind carrying off handed as I can reach for my gun with my strong hand and that takes priority for me.

I have more right-handed locks then I do left-handed ones but all of my knives (except from one) allow for left-handed carry. Having said that, I will not spend more than $200 on any knife that does not come in a lefty-specific model (lefty lock and clip).

Unfortunately, I miss out on a lot of great knives like DDR/HTM. It is a shame more makers don't make left-handed knives but I can understand that we are in the minority. I will however continue to admire the Gun Hammer Radian from afar; it is a beautiful piece of work!
