I've been dreaming of taking up knifemaking as a hobby for a long time now, but it seems like a daunting task to undertake without anyone showing me what to do.

I live in Sacramento, CA, so if there are any makers out there who live anywhere nearby (Bay Area included), I'd love to come and see how you work for a day or so.

Well I can't do you any good teaching you to make a knife, I am about as rookie as they come, but I do live just a short ways from you down here in Stockton. I have spoken with a few people down here and south of here about watching them work, but so far scheduling has been the hold up (and now the price of gas!). A friend of mine told me to check out Bay Area Knife Collectors Association, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. My maker list for 2011 shows a few in your area and in prticular Christian Kilpatrick in Citrus Heights, I don't know him or have any affiliation with him (his site is not working under the address listed), just simply supplying a name off a list. Maybe someone on here or Christian himself is on here and can supply contact info.

I sure would love the chance to watch an experianced smith at work, and maybe we can set up something. I know I tend to learn better when there are a few people learning along side me asking questions I may not have thought to ask.

Cheers-

I live north of Truckee in Graeagle and was planning a hammer in for this spring( if it ever stops snowing). If you wanted to come up for a day when I had the forge going your welcome to do so.

Mike,
I'm down in the Bay Area and would love to take a drive up to do some forging if the schedule works out. We'll have to keep in touch when the snow starts to melt and see if it will work:thumbup:

To the OP, you should look up Serge Panchenko who is a maker here on the forums. He lives in Sacramento as well.

Mike, I think a NorCal hammer in is a great idea! I read all these posts of gatherings all over the place, and have yet to hear of any in NorCal. I thought I heard of some down in Visalia but don't know for sure. Mike, if you can tolerate a complete rookie with no metal mashing tools, I would love to watch you work for a day.

I'd be happy to have ya up for a day when all this snow melts. I think my place would be great for a NorCal hammer in. It's a very touristy town with things to do for the wives if they decided to come. I think I'll try and set a date in the next month or so and see who's interested.

Sold!!! I'll PM you with my contact info. Can't wait!

I live in Citrus Heights. You could come by my place I don't have much but you could get an idea of whats involved with knifemaking. I just got done twisting up a bar of 80 layer twist damascus and I could probably set you up with a piece of 0-1, w2, 1084, 5160, or some 52100. That way you could get a start with real steel not some lawn mower blade stuff. shot me a pm and i'll get you my adress and cell number

Couldn't send you a PM, but I posted a visitor message on your profile. Thanks!

Hello Dakota 11 I am in sacramento and new to the forum and can't figure out how to send you a PM ? Let me know how we can talk ?

Mark,

I think you have to be a paid member to send and a paid member to receive private messages.

It's only $10 - well worth helping keep the forums open.

Hi Guys. I'm up the hill in Alta. We had a Mini Hammer In a couple years ago and had a great group. Great time also. Would love to come up to Grey Eagle, Mike. Enjoyed chatting with you at Casa Grande.
Anyone is welcome to come by here and talk knives and play. Summer is actually here.

Dacota, fix your PM's Haven't been able to PM you for quite awhile:D

Sounds like it might be time for a hammer-in. I would definitely show up again. Had a good time at oldwolf's place a few years ago.

I'm here in the Citrus Heights area... haven't made any knives yet (just began purchasing tools and steel), but would love to be a fly-on-the-wall or help with cleanup, etc. I'm very eager to learn and just being in the presence of others with know-how would be a step in the right direction for me. And perhaps if someone is feeling generous with their time, maybe I could ask a few newbie questions as we go along?

Hey guys I'm still alive. Ken I know I probbaly still need to finish welding that press for you if you havent had it done. This last year has been brutal on me. My brother died 2 weeks before my dad, who happened to die the day before my birthday. Then my Grandma proceeds to die 2 months to the day from my dads death. On top of all this I'm dealing with a slipped disc on my L1 with severe disc degenration of my entire lumbar region of my spine. And in the last week I have learned that I have moderate CTS which will probably require surgery since I'm losing feeling in my hands and my hands hurt like a SOB in the mornings. So usually on the weekends I take a handful of pain pills and start hammering on the anvil when the hands dont hurt. I'm also really busy with work, you know roofing contractors get busy this time of year, but I'm usually around on the weekends. So if any1 wants to come by on thewekends call me on my cell 4-5 days in advance 916-521-0505 Pete. I'll clean my shop area this week so its nice and pretty

Wow, Dakota, sounds like it's really been a rough one for you! :(

If you're sure it won't be an imposition, I'd really like to drop by some weekend soon. Let me know if there's one time that's more convenient than another. I'm on a night shift, but am very willing to adjust my sleep to learn some tricks of the trade.
