Hey folks,

I'm relatively new around here, and working on being a newbie knifemaker, and at the same time just moved. Any folks here in or around the Hanover, PA area?

I figure it's always good to meet folks with simliar interests as me, so here seems as good a place as any to look :)

hey deker,
i live in Westminster but am currently at college, i know that Butch and Nowiki live not to far and i also know that there is a Chesapeake Bay Knife Club meeting every 2nd Monday of the mounth 7 to 9 at the Rosedale Federal Bank building in Perry Hall. i am sure one of the guys here knows more about it than i do, i have yet to go to one because of the college thing but want to stop by during summer. I am sure one of the guys here knows more about it than i do (considering i hardly know anything about it). Larry Nowicki is the one that informed me about it, im sure he could help you out.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't know if I'll be able to make any meeting this week, but I'll see if I can work it into my plans soon.

jlharri:

Once you're home from school you should stop into one of the guild meetings for the Blacksmith Guild of Central MD. It's generally the 3rd Sunday of the month at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster. Great bunch of folks and right in your back yard! All the meeting dates should be up at the guild website.

I look forward to meeting folks around here.

hey deker,
the guild meetings sound very interested, i will def have to check them out. Its funny you should say they are in my back hard, because in fact, that is practically in my front yard, i live acrosse the street from the hospital, quite literally a 2 min walk from the Ag center. I cannot believe I have never heard of these meetings, but I am always looking for announcements and such around and they dont even advertise the gun/knife show at the Ag center (and i missed it last year which made me very upset) so it is no surprise to me that i have not heard anything about it. Thanks for the info though, i am looking forward to coming home even more now. Hope to meet you.

I know exactly where that is :) Are the tool & die places there in Littlestown good places to find tool steel scraps for sale? I'va been meaning to stop in and chat w/ folks, but haven't managed it yet.

Jake:

The guild is actually in their 20th year now, though there have been blacksmiths teaching at the farm museum for longer than that. We have a membership of ~250 and some great smiths. As a matter of fact, Ken Schwartz who is the master smith at Williamsburg now learned smithing at the farm museum. We always have some great classes as well...that reminds me, I have another one I need to sign up for today :) Let me know when you're back in town and we can meet up at a guild meeting or something.

I've never worked with any of the CPM steels. Are they at all useful for forging or better suited to stock removal? Do you know if the folks they order from can get 1095 or 5160 flat bar? Either way I'll see if I can swing over and say hi sometime soon. And thanks a million for the invite to drop some stuff into the kiln, I may take you up on that once I have anything that needs treating. Right now my anvil and forge have quite a bit of snow on them.

jhlarri:

We look forward to having you stop by. One of the best classes available is just coming by a guild meeting.

not sure that forging cpm steel is worth it
someone might chime in on it if not ill ask the rep when he calles me back about cpm154cm and cpms125v that im looking to try

I have a feeling that the CPM steels aren't very blacksmith friendly. *shrug* All I need is a good junkyard for some springs :D
