Any Makers using true Ambi Locking Systems?

Knife Makers,

Are any of you out there using truly ambidextrous locking systems in your folders? I know some makers still do backlocks but what about a lock similar to the axis or the ambi locks of spyderco sog or coldsteel.

My dream of comissioning a knife with a sifu style blade and axis style release may be possible if some of you do work with ambi locks.

Thanks,
James M.

Many Benchmade models with the AXIS lock are completely ambi. They even include several clip mounting points on both sides of the handles. The 806 and 710 come to mind as two that I've used as lefty models with no problems.

Ive got an 806 which I absolutely love as well as a 941 and a 732. I was just curious if any custom makers were using ambi locks.

I believe Scott Sawby's self lock is ambidextrous. It also keeps the knife nice and thin. I've wanted one of his blades for quite some time. I handled one of Win Heger's at a NJCKA meeting, they are exceptional.

That sawby self-lock is interesting but most of those knives are a little out of my price range.

Matt Cucchiara's knives look like they would meet my needs.
(And they look Damn Good too)

Matt's knives are awesome!
His knives are not ambidextrous though, in the strictest sense of the word.
He uses a framelock, so the lock is either right or left-handed.

As mentioned above Grant and Gavin Hawk's folding knives are ambidextrous in their locking mechanisms (DOG, TOAD, and ET).

I believe William Henry knives have an ambidextrous locking design called the Con-lock.

Hope this helps,

Hmm...poked around a bit online after noticing the knife and locking mechanism I remembered wasn't on the WH site any longer.

It was called the Matt Lock after designer Matt Conable and the knives I remembered were called Spectrums, but it doesn't look like they are being made any more.

arawn,
Thanks for the info the folders at hawk knives are very captivating. I especially like the T.O.A.D.
I may check out a CRKT Hawk D.O.G. since ive been collecting different ambi knives anyway.

Chuck,
Ken's custom work is awesome but he is one of those makers who rarely sells outside of the shows. Also ive heard the waiting list for a custom onion is as long as my leg.

I do have some hope with kershaw's implementation of the stud lock but am still skeptical as to its reliability. the lock is so far forward of where the hand goes.

Yeah I've looked at a few OTF's but since I like to carry my knives every day that brings up legal issues. I also have heard that the Dalton Waco uses an ambi lock and of course the BM4200 and BM5000 are ambi autos

I've never seen a poorly implemented design by Kershaw. I've personally played with several Stud-Lock knives, both customs and Kershaws. The lock is very very strong and easy to use. Ken developed the stud lock years ago and just recently released it.

The new Kershaw Offset won Knife of the Year at Blade. The Offset has a MIM (metal injected molded) blade and locks up via the stud lock. It is a really cool knife. I'm planning to buy one.

Did anyone get any good pic's of the offset while at blade?

The only knife with a stud lock that I see on kershaw's site is the mini mojo.
