I'm going on a vacation in the next few weeks and I am planning to go somewhere (more like no where) in North Carolina. Does anyone know of any good areas to get lost?

Does not matter. Just some place where I can go, park, then hike and get lost. Preferably without getting yelled at.

Shining Rock Wilderness, Brevard NC, not too in the middle of know where but lost of places to get lost.

Yeah. Try the ENTIRE town of Selma or Smithfield. Jesus what a jailbreak that s#*thole turned out to be. Although, there is a snowcone stand right outside Raleigh that has the best snowcones I've ever had in my life, and I consider myself somewhat of a snowcone connoisseur. If anyone is ever around that area, it's called Hills of Snow and it's just a little shack that's shaped like a big ass snowcone. It's worth it, I promise.

I'm from Marshal, NC. Its a small town in Western NC about 20 min from the TN border. Good places to check out are Cherokee National forest, Pisgah National Forest. Also you can fins all sorts of good trails and such on the parkway.

These are just a few areas to get you started. The links will give you an idea of each and hopefully help you find more info. If you Google map either Asheville, or Marshal, NC and zoom out a little you will see they are surrounded by national forest and recreation area. Hope this helps, and that you enjoy your time IN NC.

If you have an questions feel free to hit me up.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys! These places look awesome, especially the snow cones :)

But one big question: Would I get in major trouble if someone saw me setting traps, making fires, fishing with no permit, etc?

And if the answer is yes, what is the chance of me getting caught?

I don't intend on harming anything, just more roughing it than I can get on a trail or at a campground. I'm not bringing much food, nor am I bringing a tent.

if ur off the beaten trail u should be OK..stay away from roads, established campsites and the like..if not u'll likely get busted!

Backpacked in this area several times and I love it there. Hike through the tunnel (the end of the road to nowhere) and you can soon be on your own in the backcountry with plenty of flowing streams and plunge pools with hand sized trout in them. The kitsch of Gatlinburg and Cherokee has not quite (but almost) crossed the mountains into Bryson City. It also where Horace Kephart is buried. There is a decent watering hole by the railroad tracks leading up to the road to nowhere. Nothing like coming off the trail to ice cold beer and bar food!

Yes. Likely because someone who sees you will report your actions. Kind of hard to convince a park ranger who is photographing your traps and in the process of confiscating your gear that you did not intend to harm anything with it

Sounds like that may be the test

Try the NC sandhills, Lineville Gorge, and a host of other places
