Does anyone know of any stories of knives coming in handy in a military situation? Whether it be life saving or super convenience, I'm interested in hearing a few.

I know a few Scout Rangers(Filipino elite recon and combat troops) who told me that their balis saved their asses(well bellies) more than once. Being in the military of a 3rd world country, MRE's are not an option. These guys carry canned food. To make a long story short, everyone in the team forgot the can opener. One of the guys balis made quick work of opening the tin. :D

I have an associate that is a Vietnam vet and he showed me a Kukri blade that he took from a Vietnamese soldier that he killed, he said that he used the kukri to crack skulls and what not.

I carried a Griptilian in Iraq in 2006-2007. It came in very handy, and never failed me.

It was recently retired to a display case on my wall.

ive got two army knife stories.. but neither are of heroic use of them-

1st- as a PVT (25 yrs ago) i didnt make much cash so buying a good knife was a big deal, right before a field exersise i ran to the PX and bought the nicest SAK i could get (not even sure of the model but it cost $65 as i recall, so whatever would have been in that price range at the time. who knows). it came with a leather pouch so i quickly attached it to my web gear and we moved out. got choppered out to our destination, patrolled all night, when i reached for it to open my breakfast MRE... gone. the sheath had opened up somewhere along the way and i never saw it again, hell i never even got to use it once. lesson? dummy cord was invented with me in mind!

2nd- later i bought a Leatherman tool... during an exercise, word was passed along that a pair of wire cutters were needed so i pulled them out and handed them off to be passed down the line where needed. when the came back the wire cutters were completely mangled beyond ever being useful again. i was pretty ticked so i tracked down the person who requested wire cutters to ask how he screwed up my new Leatherman.... he was trying to cut through a couple rows concertina.

after that i just settled for the M9.
