Any mods to handles for housing items?

I came across a thread via Google search where somebody had modded the inside of their micarta handle to house various items such as a small fire steel, tinder, and other odd and ends, but for the life of me can not find it again...

Has anybody completed anything similar? I am eyeing off my scales alongside my dremel as I type this....

I haven't seen the micarta mod, but it's funny how this topic used to be so prevalent, and then it just sort of died out.
Back when most of the Becker talk was in General or W&SS forum, lots of people would post up in-handle kits with the Grivory scales.
Part of the reason you don't see it as much? Maybe because micarta scales are more readily available, and less folks leave the original Grivory.
I bet searches in W&SS would turn up some results, but since that forum has been partitioned, I'm not sure where the older posts would be.

the only factory approved items are bells and whistles :)

a few people swapped the hex bolts out for thick slotted, so you could get in there easily in the field.

and a few people put some stuff in there, for the truly dire or something, but really, what a pain the butt; remove three screws (unless you opted for two for some reason), just to get some tiny probably rusted sweat stained item? :) heh.

the altoids or other small tin, and the pocket sheath hold so much more readily accessed stuff it's not even funny

so, i think once the rambo days died out, a lot of people mostly stopped doing that.

plus it rattles :>

Mine didn't. I padded the sides with the flayed skin of my enemies.

Ewwwww. That's gotta smell during the summer.

As far as modding the micarta, I don't see why not, you need an endmill or a dremel tool, a marker, a breathing mask, a steady hand, and some time.

I'm not a big fan of "handle kits" mostly, because I don't think they are worthwhile. If you ever find yourself in a "knife only" situation, well, something has gone severely wrong. I haven't been able to do that on accident, I've done it a few times on purpose, but never for real. I just always have stuff in my pockets, so, in my knife handle just doesn't make sense.

Now, that's just me, if you wanna do a micarta handle kit, I say go for it, post up pics, and let us know how it works out.

Mostly, it's just a really fun challenge as far as removing hex screws with your teeth. Try it some time.
The other option is to put an allen wrench in a zip lock bag and keep it permanently in your...

... pocket. :D

I keep meaning to toss some stuff in there for emergencies. Fishing hooks, some heavy duty fishing line, maybe some matches and a small ferro rod. Just some basic stuff. You never know, and if you got the space, might as well use it.

The only thing I would think of doing is to drill a small hole horizontally cut it into an L shape for an allen wrench that's the right size for the bolts.
Like a slide and click lock so its accessible but mostly under the grip.

Where, in Guyon's pocket?!? That's definitely going to hurt...

'flayed skin....' - I like that.... :)

The mod I saw appeared to have some sort of push button pin lock at the rear hole, swiveled across on the front bolt. I saw a small compass, straight ferro rod and some other small items which I assumed were tinder or possibly water purification tabs wrapped in something (?????). I still can not find it!!!! It looked like a bk7...
