I live in the mountains of Virginia, and I have an uncle who brought me some Chicken of the Woods. I have to say I was quite skeptical, at trying something my uncle picked out of the woods. However, I tried it and loved it. I have always loved mushrooms, ever since I tried some when I was young. I would actually like to start going out looking for mushrooms myself, but I have no clue how to start off. I do know identification of mushrooms is a must, and very important. What is your experience with mushroom hunting?

I have a long list of mushrooms I collect, depending on the season. Start with Morels, or chickens.
I add to my list VERY slowly; remember, everything is edible once.

Chicken of the Woods probably stick out like a sore thumb in the woods, like a traffic cone. I do know not to eat the ones off of Mario Kart :D

I harvest morels, oyster and shaggy manes. I know where lots of chicken of the woods grow, just never had anybody positively ID them for me. This year im eating them. I will probably post a pic here first just to make sure.

I made a thread here in hunting and fishing juat a week ago, with several pounds of morels . Im frying some tonight and have a few lbs battered and frozen.

Find you someone who is a seasoned mushroomer and ask them to school you on two or three types. Morels are an easy spring edible, chicken of the woods and hens of the woods are very easy to ID and can be found in the summer, puffballs for late summer and elm oysters for early fall. Between those types you should be able to find more than you would be able to eat on your own. There are plenty others but slowly build up your knowledge and go easy trying anything new that your body has never had. Just because they are edible doesn't mean you are not allergic to one. I busted out in hives once from mushrooms on a steak at a restaurant...they looked like your standard foodservice approved mushroom but I sure had the hives hit me within about thirty minutes of finishing my meal. Near as I can tell it was the mushrooms but it could have been a seasoning. Never had it happen before or since so who knows but I try new mushrooms by the tiny bite first before I eat a small amount the next day. And I know someone was being funny about the trippy kinds of mushrooms but please don't go there, folks have troubles enough without without adding to it with hallucinations from those types.

Hmm, I never thought about that. I know I'm not allergic to Chicken of the Woods, because my uncle had one of those gallon storage bag, and it was gone later that day. :p

I went out on my lunch hour today.

About a half pound of Morels. :D

We used to hunt Morels when I lived in Indiana. Here in Florida, I just pass. The wrong mushroom and you can be DRT - Dead Right There.
