Any new hawkbill designs coming up?

Hi AmadeusM. Nothing planned.

but, if we were to consider a new hawkbill, what would be your ideal piece?

I'd like to see a Civilian about a third smaller but with a Tuffram handle. The Matriarch is cool but I'd like a different handle material.

thanks

Well, now I feel like a kid in a candy store, so I apologize i advance if I omit something, write something contradictory, or well, dumb... :)

I would like a fixed blade, but no skeletonized handle/slabs. G-10 would be nice, especially in strong, vibrant colors, which in addition to being more PC/less threatening, appeal to the eye...like ivory, orange, even pink (everything except school bus yellow). Where the blade begins, I would like to see a large hole for the finger, for better retention. But, I could live without one (yes, I realize those are two different designs in that case). On the handle itself, I would like to see mild grooves, on both sides, accomodating the reverse grip as well. About the curvature of the tang/handle, I am not sure. Kershaw talon had a nice reverse curvature, but that's not to say that the straight design would not work. The end of the tang would have a protrusion that could be used for impact.

As far as the blade profile goes, it would have to be different from SPOT, as that one kind of looks stubby, and the blade shape is not to my taste (of course, individual preference). I would also like to avoid the thin, delicate Civilian tip. I would like it to be serrated all the way (except maybe 10 mm from the tip) , as serrations cut better and are easier to sharpen (again, personal preference). Blade thickness, well, I would like to see something in the 4-5 mm range. The blade itself should be a little less curved than Harpy, but still not straight like Ronin.

As far as the steel goes, I would be happy with any higher-end stainless steels. I am not a fan of black coatings so my dream knife would be kind of shiny I suppose. Matte/satin ok too.

As far as blade length goes, I would like it to be under 3 inches blade length. For me, that's more than enough.

For the carry option, I would like a black or tanned leather holster (but I would not say no to Kydex either, although it could scratch the finish), that could somehow be carried in one of (or in as many as possible) positions:

1) on the belt, horizontally, front, left iliac or lumbar region, depending on where the belt rides.
2) on the belt, vertically
3) independent of the belt, with a clip of some sort, tucked in shorts, belly-band rigs, etc.
4) around the neck

Magnets inside the sheath would also feel nice (reassuring).

Well, that sort of comes to mind....

Thanks for asking. :)

A Harpy style blade with higher end steel (CPMS30V) and G10 handles would be cool. Make it a lockback with 4 sets of clip holes (like the Chinook) for any orientation. A carbon fiber sprint run would also be nice.

I'd like to see the matriarch blade with a stainless steel handle as on the police model.
The matriarch handle is a little too thin, or have I big paw??

Well seeing as how many gardeners like the hawkbills, I think the obvious move would be to go look at their needs. I'm guessing blunt tip, tough blade (in my opinion more important than a razor sharp but brittle blade in the garden), good corrosion resistance (maybe even the magical H1), green G-10 scales, good solid clip. I think you should look at a slightly more robust blade (wider/thicker). Since you've already got the spydersaw, it should concentrate on more of a thin pruning knife or sickle. Talk to those mushroom farm guys :)

I have to jump-in with a request for a sprint-run of a CF Harpy (like the civilians were done: in left, right, PE, and SE). It's one of the Spyderco "starter" models which hasn't yet been recognized with this treatment....long overdue in my opinion.

I'll have to jump in and get your back on that request. What a marvelous idea, one that would get my money.

maybe it is a tad bit late in the whole process of the karambit craze but I would like a fixed model.

H1 blade with frn handle in yellow, red, blue with remote release feature on pommel end of handle. An way to make the tips a bit stronger on these style blades? A fixed blade hawkbill with g10 handles would be cool too

HI blade with a g10 handles. This should be a natural. According to the ads this knife was introduced to be used by nautical types to cut ropes and lines. But I will settle for a nice version with CF handles and s30v steel. That one would just have to stay home when I go to the beach.

Instead of a SPOT/LaGriffe style hole, I would vote for a Kerambit style. I'm thinking of a FB that would appeal to gardeners, as well as rescue folks. The Kerambit hole would allow the knive to be "dangled" while doing something else with my hands. I like the Dodo so much for garden work, that a "stretched" Dodo blade would be very cool. Not as pointed a tip as the Civilian, but the more reinforced tip of the Dodo. It could be offered in blunt and pointed configurations, with a skeletonised handle designed to accept either scales or wrap, according to individuals preferences. S30 would be icing.
