I am thinking of completely replacing bread with potatoes and sweet potatoes, as I can't find a bread I like in the local stores and haven't had any commercial bread since August (enjoyed whole grain flax baguettes from California while in Reno). Tried couple of Panera breads, didn't like the taste. Don't have enough time or patience to try to bake my own.

Anyway, good idea from a nutritional standpoint?

Still planning on keeping whole grain pasta in my repertoire.

Thanks. :)

my friend said her folks and similar in the southern part of japan eat sweet potatoes almost more so than rice. the main thing to look out for basically is processed type food. It can say whole grains this, whole grains that, but is it processed. Not sure where you're from, but if you have a Whole Foods nearby, the employees are generally really nice and helpful and can point you in the right direction.

Yup, a potato or sweet potato is as whole as it gets, just wanted to know how the numbers compared.

I'm surprised you don't like Paneras. They're good, but a little overpriced. Is taste the only the reason for you giving up breads made from wheat?

Nope. When I look for a bread, it has to 1) have minimal number of ingredients, low sugar, be whole grain, high fiber etc, 2)taste good. Panera met 1, but not 2, but taste is individual.

There was a German bakery in TN that met my requirements nicely with several breads, not just one. Maybe I should look for something like that in my area.
