Any of us using a scroll saw to profile blades?

Just got one for cutting out scales and was just wondering about using bi-metal blades. I doubt they'd last long in steel but thought I'd ask.

Thanks.

I haven't tried it yet but keep thinking about using it to clean out the web when making guards that require a square hole.

Hey buddy ! I have a HF Bandsaw and use Bi Metal blades in it.....works great for me. Not sure how it would work in a Scroll Saw. If your ever thinking of an inexpensive way to easily get it done the HF model can be purchased for around $50 on the website and I get my bimetal blades from Grainger. That HF model is a little workhorse for the money.

I use a variable speed scroll saw with jewelers blades to cut out some fancy shape guards similar to a Tsuba. The blades are a little bit longer than a scroll saw blade ,so you have to snap off about 3/8" with a pair of pliers.Otherwise,it works fine.I have cut the guard slot on it,but find it is much faster and easier to do it by hand with a jewelers saw ( looks like a coping saw).I would think it is too slow to cut up much steel ,like profiling a blade.A HF metal band saw will do that (put on a Lenox blade).

I admit I tried it with bimetal blades cutting 440C. At high speeds the steel work hardened because no significant amount of metal was being removed to dissapate the heat and the blade dulled quickly. At slow speeds the thing lacked torque to get a decent bite on the material. Never had the patience to cut more than 1/4" at a time.

They will cut light weight brass and such, thicker materials and short stroke build up heat because the blade has no time to clear the teeth.

I found some bi-metal in the Enco master cataloge but not in my length. Seems like George explained it pretty well. I won't be trying to profile a blade with a scroll saw.

Bruce, I got mine from a knife supply company (Kovals?) at the blade show. Look for jewelers saw blades. I use them in a frame someone gave me for fine work and cleaning out the web on a guard.
