My parents are heading over to Kauai for the next couple of weeks. If any of you makers would like to have a potential customer visit send me your contact info. The last time they were there my dad came home with a custom ukulele (sorry if I miss-spelled that) my Hawaiian is a bit rusty. Any way, if he's going to buy a musical instrument that he didn't know how to play (still doesn't) hehehe, I' d imagine he'd buy a knife since he loves and collects them.

Let me know

Rick

Well, I'm definitely not from Hawaii, but Phil Dwyer (Farmer Phil) lives in Honolulu. So if your parents happen to be in Oahu for much time (maybe when they fly in or out), maybe they could look him up. He's a great guy and has offered to meet with any of us who head his way. I won't presume to speak for him, but maybe he'll see this and reply.

Kauai is an amazingly beautiful place and someplace I definitely need to go back to. I hope they have a great time!

I live on Oahu, and so do a good few other makers, but I don't know of anyone on Maui or Kauai currently making knives. I have a friend on Kauai I made pig hunting knives for, he told me vaguely one time about a friend of a friend who made blades there but.... yeah. I'm going up to Ken Onion's shop tomorrow (it's right up the street) and I'll see if he knows of anyone on Kauai.

Hi Rick,

Steve Wolf Shimanek, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/member.php?u=221989, is on Kauai. Might want to check in with him.

Here are a couple links mentioning a few makers in Hawaii (Oahu).

Looks like Salem (vorpalknives) has some good connections. Maybe he'll come up with more ideas.

Hope your folks have a great time. If they get to Oahu I'd love to meet them (thanks for the compliment Nathan) but not as a selling knifemaker though. :o

All the best, Phil

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely pass it on to him. I'll also let him know that there is a veritable cornucopia of Makers on Oahu if he wants to venture over. Knowing him and his penchant for knives he might do some island hopping. If he decides to I'll get back to you all on some contact info.

Thanks again!
Rick

Hi all, I am a new knife maker and live on Maui. New to the trade, but have made a few knives, I like to work with 01. Playing with some L6 stuff now. How many knife makers or blacksmiths in Hawaii?

John

Get yourself a "Knives Illustrated" yearly and look through the Hawaii section in the back. Most of them are on Oahu. I lived on Maui for a couple years and made knives there. Wish I was around to work with you.

As far as smiths on Maui, I know of three guys that have propane forges I built- don't know how much use they get. In Lahaina: Keola Sequeira and David Ormsbee at the south end of town. In Makawao, Jeff Lounsbury, of JDL services was getting into bladesmithing and bought a forge from me.

Way out in Ulupalakua there is a very cool guy who is a bladesmith and blacksmith, has a couple powerhammers including a nice #250 Little Giant. He makes some cool stuff. Peter Stolle is his name.

There's also a guy who sells kitchen and other knives that he has put handles on (not made the blade) at the Lahaina Banyan Tree market on weekends.

That's all I know about smithing on Maui right now. PM me if you want to get in touch with any of those guys.

Hey John, how is the knife making coming along? Are you selling anything currently?
