So does any one and has any one had any incidents where it has opened in there pocket?
I find it takes me longer messing about with the safety to draw it than it would with a manual.
What do you think?

I see the safety as the insurance policy that kershaw has put in so they do not get sued should a knife open in someones pants.

The saftey I think is the bigger gimmick than the speed safe. Gimmicks usually don't work well right? Well the speed safe works fine but the saftey doens't. Instead, the safety helps to draw those weary of accidents into buying the knife. Thats How I sell the knife anyway.

I do ever since getting one a few weeks ago. It stays inside my pocket with a small lanyard attached tied in a reeves knot ending in a small monkey's foot. No incidences as of yet.

id like to see that reeves not with a monkey fist on the end, thaty poor monkeys fist never works for me lol

I'll send you a couple, with good instructions oh how to tie them...LOL
I can send them straight to your store?

I never use the lock on my stainless chive on purpose and have never had it open accidentally BUT I have taken the knife out and found that the lock had been pushed into the locked position accidentally.( car keys, fingernail, wayward chunk of lint )

This is actually the first lanyard I have made like this. I just learned the Monkey fist knot, and it is really a pain in the a$$ to tighten up. This knot on my knife was done using only 2 turns in each direction, and it isn't loaded with anything. I just tightened it on itself. I have done another lanyard like this to try on my Mini Commander to see if I like it or not. There isn't really much detail in my knot because I used plain OD Para cord. Hope the file loads.

Here is where I got an idea on how to tie one.

and I haven't had it go off yet. I never engage the safety and only once have I had the safety engage on its own. It rides in my front left pocket which is also the pocket where I keep my keys. Since I have one of the few master keys to the building I'm constantly reaching in there. I hardly notice the little Chive. I don't know how it would fair with jeans, I usually have on khakis or Dickies.

It's never opened up on me in my pocket and I use it as a money clip...but it HAS opened up on me twice when I have dropped it.

keep track of the way you're laying your rope, and tighten backwards... meaning the last loops you make, you tighten first...

It will take a maybe ten minutes to tie one of these knots, and I've seen even the most experienced knot tiers a few tries to get on right, and even more walk away in frustration.

for me, one in four tries ends in a dismal failure...LOL

I keep hearing about the safety on the Chive, remeber folks this is not meant to be an offensive/defensive weapon, it's meant to open boxes, letters, and cut string, maybe trim a fingernail or two, but that's the extent of it.

Does it really matter if it takes an extra second to slide the safety off?

If it comes down to a matter of life and death, rather than rummage around in my pocket for my Chive, I think I'll reach for the BM's I have clipped to either pocket first.:D

At the risk of turning this into a "Monkey's fist" thread, here's my experience:

Cool knot to end a lanyard with. I took a look at the instructions, figured "it can't be that hard". It started out alright, but soon the parallel loops started becoming not-parallel. :) I'll call my first trial the "Monkey's Ass".

Second trial: absolute failure. Gotta make the first set of loops big enough so that you can get everything through them on the third set.

Third trial: Looking better. While tying, I wrapped the first set of loops around my 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers, it helps to keep the cord neat. On the 2nd loop, I threaded the cord through the gap between my 3rd and 4th fingers twice, and then threaded it once through the gap between my 2nd and 3rd fingers. Works great.

Just so I don't go OT, I always carried my Chive with the safety on. Nifty knife, but the constant worrying of "will it open in my pocket", and the need to switch off the safety kind of takes away from the smooooth gadget factor.

FWIW,
I broke the safety off both my Chive and Scallion. It wasn't easy either. Those suckers are pretty tough.
They were a bigger PITA than asset, so they were cast into outer darkness.:p

Hey Gang,
I own a chive and it has opened in my pocket twice. the safety does not work in my knife. I wear loose pants and big pockets, so all it takes is something to hit that "flicker" up top and whoa ! . I have sent the knife back to Kershaw 2 times now, but they havent fixed it. I know what is wrong with it and even wrote them a note the second time I returned the knife. I can fix most of the problems with some loctite but I am just "turned off " by it now. Its a shame cause I wanted it as a "gentlemans" knife, for when I go out and dont want to carry a 4 incher. What bothers me most is that they(Kershaw) just ignored me. So I really dont recomend the knife to anyone. Oh I also have its big brother the 1550 ST now that has never opened in my pocket. But its larger and I think the lack of a flicker makes it safer.
Oh Well
Jack
