I wear one everyday and in the field, i have a black one and a cammo one, IMO for the money(got mine for $20 used) you just cant beat them. They are tough as nails and seem like they will last forever.

Yeah, I've got two. A medium that the wife wears and a large that I wear from time to time.

Been wearing my OD one since the late 70's and bought a black one about 5 years ago. The OD has been through alot is still in very good shape. Have liners for both which makes them very versitile. Love the big chest pockets and the hood in the collar.

....with liner. Excellent value. Very durable. I have my Woodland one stored in my "just in case" cold weather module.

I've had three. The first one(in OD) was the best. It lasted forever. My other two(one black, the other Navy blue) didn't last near as long. I think they have been making these jackets with cheaper materials or something.

On my second one, and now it's too ratty for work so it's the official dog walking jacket.
The bottom pockets are worn out, the bottom drawstring rubbed thru and the sleeves are frayed. Love that jacket :)

Been thinking about finding a better liner for our 2 jackets. Anyone found aftermarket liners for them worth mentioning?

Still got the OD one my dad gave me 15 years ago, with liner and extreme cold button-on hood. It gives me somewhere to put my "POW/MIA I wasn't there but I still care" patch, tho I can't find any good 3x5" US flag patch for the shoulder. Something about the winter and living in the city makes me want to get a urban camo one, happens every year, I wish I could explain why.

I know it looks cool and there is a type of nostalgia link to it.

BUT it is cotton!

I bought one on a hunting trip to Vancouver, BC. It Ice/rained for hours and my jacket was soaked to the bone, liner and all. I almost got hypothermia that night.

Now I have multiple synthetic shells in EDC, Car & BOB. You just don't know what the weather will do. I would hate to be in a survival situation with only a cotton army field jacket.

Sorry, to go against all the praise for it but that is my feeling.

I have to agree with chrisaloia, they have a very nostalgic look to them, but there are much better outer garments out there, I havent worn one in years....I would hate to get caught out in bad weather with it, the jacket had its time but technology has prevailed giving us much better options

You are right. Cotton is a killer in cold wet conditions. I've yet to get wet wearing my M65, but, I have gotten cold in it and have discovered that to stay warm, lots of layering underneath is needed. I have a lite weight waterproof jacket that has a wool liner and is about 1/3 the weight of the M65. It's warmer than the field jacket w/liner without layering. It has become my main BOB coat and a wool coat layers underneath of it very well. I still have a poncho w/liner in my bag too, just in case I need em.

Better liners can be found through Greene Military. They sell liners with knit cuffs and pockets so it can actually be worn by itself. A vast improvement over the regular style.

Ive worn mine when its been 10 degrees and its kept me warm, all I had on underneath was thermal underwear shirt and t-shirt.

Ive also been in the rain with it while hunting, about 3 hours of constant rain and I stayed dry.

Mine is 50% cotton and 50% nylon made by Golden mfg company.I bought it about 6 years ago at a gun show and its been through hell and is still looking good.

I got mine for 40 bucks and later got the liner for 10 bucks. So 50 bucks spent on a jacket that keeps me warm and dry,I couldnt ask for anything more.

I like the M65, it's a tough coat for work and play. What do you all think of wool as a liner to the coat? It would add a little weight to an already heavy jacket, but I'm thinking that it would be worth it. What are your thoughts?

Hi Longbow,

I think that would be a great idea,Is there a maker for one?

I would have to wear a thermal type long sleeve shirt underneath as wool makes me itch:grumpy:

I havn't seen anything like it. I'll talk to a seamstress friend of mine and see if she can whip one up and what it'll cost. I itch with wool too, but I'm thinking that good old Merino wool would be the ticket. Probably looking at some pretty good dough, but it's worth investigating it further and if it isn't too much, I might give it a try.
