Any Opinions on MOD ATAC 2001 Knife of the Year?

I would like one with a bead blast finish. The current production model is larger than I would like. Someone claimed that MOD unveiled a smaller version this year at the Blade Show but I cannot confirm this.

Also, if you like the recurve design and you are considering something like the SOG Seal 2000 (Which is not recurve) go do a www.yahoo.com search for the Boker Orca, Boker Orca II, and Boker Beluga. I recently handled the Orca and it is one hell of an awesome fixed blade. Super stout and heavy duty. I have never cared for Boker knives but one of the Orca/Beluga models is definitely worth considering.

That's cool. That's the first bead blast model I have seen. Thanks for posting the picture. I am still trying to confirm the information about MOD producing a smaller version this year.

I have a MOD ATAC with a black non-serrated blade.

I cannot remember what store I bought it from. They may have been in Michigan. I wish I could remember who they were to give them a recommendation. The guy didn't scream at me for waking him up a 3 am and he special ordered the non-serrated version which he doesn't normally carry.

I generally dislike "fantasy" elements such as spikes, knuckle bows, and upswept quillons. But for some reason when I saw this knife I just had to have it.

I'm not qualified to evaluate the ATAC's fighting qualities but the upper edge is quite dull. I suppose this was done for liability reasons, but it can probably be sharpened with some effort. According to the MOD site, the blade is A-2.

The only thing I really dislike is the sheath. It feels like the plastic trays used for low-end tool sets. It's the kind of hard plastic that tears rather than cracks and makes an loud noise when the knife is drawn.

Silver Puss: Too bad about the sheath. :( Any way you could post or email some pics?

Thanks

Doc: I don't own a digital camera, but I'll see if the company toyroom has one. We've got things like GPS units and shortwave receivers you can check out.

The sheath is fully functional, apart from its making an annoying sound. The plastic will probably not break under a reasonable amount of abuse, but it just looks cheap. I really hate sheaths not made from real leather.

Oh. Well, are you sure its not Kydex? I personally can't stand leather sheaths! :p I can't see a respected company like MOD producing a knife like that, especially having it win the knife of the year award, but throwing in a cheap sheath! Anyone else have experience? Thanks silverpuss...

The data sheet that came with the knife says,

Blade : A-2
Sheath: Prylon

My Battle Mistress comes with a cordura sheath lined with Kydex which is the only thing I dislike about that package. I don't own any sheath with a Kydex outer shell, but my guess is that I probably wouldn't like that either.

I remember now that the online store was Finer Points Cutlery. He didn't scold me for getting him out of bed, so I've got to recommend him.
