I was looking at some oakleys, the price was around 135.00 are they worth it. I dont know much about them maybe someone can shade some light on the subject. ( sorry about the pun...) :)

what model are they? be sure you buy them from a reputable dealer and watch out for those fake oakleys that pop up on ebay left and right. $135 is a lot of money to spend on fakes so make sure they are real.

I've had a number of Oakleys, most of them can be found for much less than retail on Ebay, you just have to make sure you buy from a reputable seller. A normally $275 pair of Julets, for example, should go for around $200 on Ebay.

Most Oakleys are pretty sturdy, and can be "freshened" by the factory for minimal cost, as long as they are not obviously abused. The major caveat here is that the coating on any of the colored lenses, like the fire iridium or ice blue, is pretty damn fragile, they will scratch if you wipe them with anything but a very clean microfiber cloth. I'm pretty sure Oakley won't replace scratched lenses under warranty.

So, bottom line, they are very good glasses, very stylish and well made, but you have to be extremely careful with the lenses. If you are one of those people who toss your glasses around, or are constantly dropping them, then Oakleys are probably not for you.

Make sure you try them on before you buy them. Oakleys do not fit comfortably at all on my head. I have about 3 pairs sitting at home. They press in behind my ears, stick out to far on the side of my head, and slip off my face at the most inopportune time. I know some people swear by them, but after trying a lot of sunglasses, I eventually stuck with Bolle.

I won't go any farther into Oakleys than what I have said, just make sure they are right for you before you buy them. Save yourself some grief.

I personally only buy glass glasses. I won't spend $150+ on plastic. Part of that has to do with the fact that it's just freaking plastic, but mostly because of how easily it gets scratched. I swear by Serrengettis myself.

i've worn oakley's for 15 years, since blades and razor blades, and i
have ditched them for Julbo's.

i suggest you look into them, much better glasses.
oakley is 2 much a fashion brand to me anymore.

I just got a pair of Oakley half-jacket from wife for Xmas and I'm very happy with them. Polarized lenses are v.good and the frame fit perfectly around my face. My brand of choice has been for years Maui Jim, sadly the last pair (MJ Sport) started to develop a crack where the lenses is screwed down to the frame. If you work a lot by the water get polarized lenses. Even though I do not like plastic, depending on your location / lifestyle / work line, plastic frames and shatter proof lenses can be a godsend.

I've been wearing Oakleys (first Blades, now M frames)for about ten years. They are plastic, but there are excellent eye protection when shooting or working. They are a serious step up from other brands as far as protection goes.

I don't find the cost that bad, because I got mine at less than retail, and I don't buy the fashionable models (X Metal, etc) or funky lens coatings.

Hi All-

Similar to Chucklehead above, I go back to the Blades and Razor Blade days with this company. Oakley is now really a fashion company...just like Puma...and no longer focused upon top-notch athletic performance. For that kind of money, I would look elsewhere.

If you are doing anything active or sports-related... go with plastic lenses. Glass may shatter and you do not want glass shards in your eye. That being said I think glass is better as far as optics go.

Oakley's are overpriced but I still get them for the fit and ability to change lenses as needed. Bolle's are probably better in terms of shear quality but I have not found any that fit me well that have interchangeable lenses. I have heard excellent things regarding Natives but have no personal experience with them. As far as the lense coatings...Oakley's do scratch easily compared to Bolle's but them again you can replace the lenses yourself.

I have the Oakley Half-Jackets (http://oakley.com/catalog/eyewear/half_jacket/). The lenses are easily changed out... spare lenses run about $40 at SunglassHut etc. and are available chaeaper online. You can swap the lenses yourself. The glasses run about $100 at Sunglass Hut right now. As far as styles go the frames are the same...only the lenses are different and you can fit either lense style into any Half-Jacket frame.

My personal decision tree... first determine if you want glass or plastic lenses...then a frame that fits... then value (price vs. quality). Safety, Comfort, and then Value.

for shooting or for casual wear i go Oakley, i got a pair of half jackets that i wear every day. I dont know of another brand that has things that i like that are as tuff as Oakley.
