Any opinions on swiss army watches?

they ain't made for the Swiss Army... that's fer shure

it's like this... Victorinox and Wenger makes knives for the swiss army... however, an american company sees that "Swiss Army" is not a trademarked name, so they trademark it, and has watches made up under contract in Switzerland and sell ten dollar watches for a hunderd dollars.

well, FWIW i had one i used for swimming/biking/running/skiing (anything were i didnt wanna mess up my TAG) for about 2 yrs, had to replace batt once, but it did ok, really did fine, and it was wet a lot. it was a base model, w/a leather band (which was kinda frazzeled) and cost IIRC $100, but it wasnt a bad watch. i wouldnt spend lotsa $$ on one but ok..........

That much? ;)

About 10 years ago, a friend and I wanted to import and sell some watches. A couple of the models were the same watches that were sold under a "designer name" by a large department store chain for $150. each.

Those watches cost us $2.05 each, "landed" (ie. all taxes and import duties paid).

Victorinox and Wenger are knife companies. Watches being sold under their names are not made by them. It's a classic example of coat tail riding.
If you want a good watch that doesn't cost a lot, look at Seiko and Invicta.

I had a Wenger watch once(still do actually), and it worked pretty well. I used it until the face got all scratched up, and threw it in the drawer. Like already mentioned, they are overpriced though. Glad I didn't spend a lot on it.

I've had a Wenger for almost 5 years now. Other than replacing the battery, I've had no problems.

Everything said basically...
Just want second that SWISS ARMY WATCHES aren't made for the swiss army at all... I can tell you that for sure because I am swiss and I am in the army! Much stuff was issued to me but never a watch!!! :D

Just get yourself a REAL fine swiss watch :)

So the question is - were you ever issued a "Swiss Army" knife? ;)

(Which brand and which model - since Victorinox and Wenger were BOTH given the rights to use that designation.)

Good Evening All-

Anyone considering a Swiss Army brand watch should do themselves a favor and allocate that money towards a Seiko automatic, which is a vastly superior watch at a similar pricepoint.

If you want something a bit more unique, obtain a Seiko that has been modified by Bill Yao at www.mkiiwatches.com.

I've got a Wenger SAW, and I'm very satisfied with it. But then, it's a $250 model which I paid $90 for (Big5 Sports). Keeps time every bit as well as my computer, looks very classy, and glows for a pretty considerable time after being in just a bit of sunlight.

That said, I sure wouldn't have paid the full $250 for it. But it was well worth the $90, and is much nicer than the Fossil watch for similar prices at department stores.

I'm going to part with the pack here, and let you know that I'm -very- pleased with my Victorinox Officer's LS. This is a large, classy watch, all polished stainless, sapphire crystal, and the butterfly deployment is awesome. Granted, I got it for a heck of a steal; it's MSRP is something in the range of 350 or so; I picked it up for 110.00 brand new in the box, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so again. I'm actually selling it to a friend of mine, and I'm looking at another model, slightly dressier, to replace it. If the Officers LS wasn't so big, there's no way I'd get rid of it, but it dwarfs my girly wrist. *Grin* The band is my favorite of any watch I've ever touched, up to and including the 18k solid gold rolex I tried on last time I was seriously watch shopping.

Actually, anyone know where I could pick up that band on the cheap? It was awesome, and I've got a titanium trititum-lit ADI dive-watch incoming that could use a nice band. :D

I also have an Officer's model, blue dial, and it has been a very fine watch. It is classy, keeps excellent time, and the crystal will NOT scratch. That last item is important if you work while wearing the watch, which I do every day.

If you are looking for a watch with all that useless, macho dial-diver junk on it, you won't like the SA Officer's. How many people actually use that superfluous crap?

I paid $203 for my watch and consider it money well spent.

I have a all stainless V'nox that works pretty well. I paid a little over $100 for it and I think it was worth it. It's a beater and I haven't had a problem with it in the 8 or so years I've had it.

komondor, I use all that superfluous crap (at least that "macho dial-diver junk"). I'm a diver.

I'm sure most people who buy those watches aren't divers, however. I assume they aren't. I could be wrong.

I've had a Wenger watch for a few years now,no problems at all and it keeps good time.Got it for $60.00 at Sams.
