Any opinions on the cable lock SQ877?

Saw this knife in a magazine a few months ago. Looked interesting for a low end folder. Anyone have one? Not much comes up when doing a search. What steel is used? How solid is the locking mechanism?

IMHO
The Cable lock is a neat idea that was not quite finished. The one I have used would not hold up to the "wack test" where the knife blade is wacked againt a board on it back side in an attempt to close the blade. Mine also does not lock up all the time. It might just need an adjustment and a little more use. With the cable exposed it is quite possible that dirt would collect between the cable and tang and prevent the cable from doing what it was intended to do.
Search these Schrade threads as I remember us talking about them in the past.

One of our members, 'SchradeFactoryGuy' (Steve) wrote about this in a way past thread where I had brought it up. He was an employee of Schrade at the time. He admitted there were problems with the knife, but promised that Schrade had worked them out and that the improved model would soon be out. Seems like it was only days later and Schrade was closed. I never did buy one, swayed by what has always been good advice here in the forum.

Glad you stopped by anyway, Agony.

Mine has never given me any problems but it is not a knife that I have used hard. The lock has always locked securely. I always double check it, though, because it just doesn't look reliable. For the price it seems a decent knife. I can see where some of them might not lock properly though.

How does it work? I'm interested in unique knife mechanisms, but have never seen one before...

here is a couple of picts with the additional hardware that comes with the knife. A clip to use on the oposite side, a spacer if no clip is wanted and a tool to maintain the knife. Only 2 screws hold the knife together.
As you can see the backspring has been replaced with the external spring that runs the length of the handle and slides up and down in a slot in the back of the tang.
Hope this helps some.

Aha. I think I get it. Having a cable wrapping around the entire knife seems a bit unnecessary though. I had an Aristocrat knife that worked similarly, but with a small bar that folded into the back of the blade. The cable seems like a gimmic...

Hey! That top bar with a hole in it that fits a round peg on the top of the tang is a knockoff on my 1950's Italian stilletto I just bought at a yard sale! I want my two dollars back!

P.S.- If I carry a cablelock, what kind of reception will I get at the airport?

Thanks everyone!
I picked one up and it's a neat little knife. The cast frame is a little rough, but hey, it was only $15. The cable is a novel idea, but I don't ever see myself using this knife for anything more than opening envelopes. It seems a bit 'weak' and I wouldn't trust it for harder tasks as I like my fingers pretty well. The blade has a nice hollow ground, and is pretty sharp and pointy. I didn't see the tool and extra clip until I looked deeper into the box. Plus the blade is way off center and touches the front scale.

Your comments are exactly why I treated the subject with a bit of levity. I agree with your assessment it is a shame it carries the Schrade tang. LT

I love this knife. I too was disapointed with fit, finish, and strength, so I bought a half dozen to find one that's better. Now, I haven't mixed and matched, but did find one that locks up lower/stronger, plus the handles aren't as pitted, and the blade grind is even.
For another novel Schrade knife, pickup the Spitfire.
