Even though I own more SAKs and Gerbers (gifts), my favorite brand is Buck. I'm not saying they're poor quality they're excellent quality! But a $40 Crosslock doesn't compare in fit and finish to a $325 Sabenza which I'm saving for. But I can't seem to do it and have an overwhelming desire to spend what I have in my knife budget so far on an Odyssey. Now if I can only find on old version with ATS-34 and no serrations.

Titan seems to have me beat in the cheapskate dept. http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/003156.html BUT WHAT I REALLY WANT KNOW IS IF ANYONE HAS BROKEN CHARACTER AND SPENT MORE THAN $100 ON KNIFE AND REGRETTED IT.

(Why is the Buck Knives Forum so dormant?)

David,

I prefer "knifenut on a budget" to cheapskate. It sounds so much better (even though it's pretty much the same thing).

I have exactly 5 knives which cost between 98 and 105 dollars (not counting shipping). Everything else is way under that. I have not regretted any of the $100 knife purchases. Since I have many dozens of knives which cost way under the $100 mark, I would view those 5 as breaking character. However, the odds are pretty good that sooner or later I'll make that fatefull purchase which I later regret. Hopefully, if I'm careful (not to mention lucky), that day is somewhere far into the future.

Also, for a using knife, there's no shame in getting a previously owned quality knife. That really helps keep the budget down. A lot of the older Bucks are still in great shape. I would love to find a good deal on a used Randall or Ruana in good shape. I've purchased a few Case collector's knives which were in used, but good, shape. Cheapskate - maybe - but I get a lot more knives this way.

Bob -- what do you call a knifenut with no budget?

Titan,

I call him/her a very unfortunate knifenut who needs a budget or a benefactor muy pronto!

A knifenut without a budget.

Since the only thing certain is change, hopefully that status will change sooner than later. There's always hope!

Hmmm sounds like me.... Good thing I work in a factory, and my job is testing and evaluating knives... Can you say Field test?

David, the odyssey you are looking for is the 181FL. I have two of them in stock. If you're interested, E-mail for details.

Isn't it amazing how 2 cents worth of opinion takes up a quarter's worth of paper???

David,
I have so many knives, that I have a real hard time justifying more.
However, when the deal is "just too good to pass up" my conscience
is more flexible. (Like the Buck Titanium for $30)
I spent over $100 on my only custom knife and it just sits in the drawer.
It's just too pretty to put in harm's way.
I try to keep my purchases under $70.
At that price, I'm not afraid to use them.

Try living in Ireland, your basic 110 folder or crosslock go for £60 to £80 .This is about $100 to $130.This means my quality knives are all about $100,but its worth it!!
My most expensive knife was a Nighthawk, the large bowie style buck is over£150 here!Still,I love my tools, from sabatier kitchen knives to my hunters,I love em all!
