I am considering buying a Ranger Ready Detachment Series model RD9.

In this price range, look, material and design is there any other knives I should consider?

I have also looked at the TOPS Steel Eagle, what do you all think of TOPS knives?

The Chris Reeve Ranger knives are more like $300 I am trying to stay close to $200 + or -?

Any info and links is greatly apprciated.

Can you all tell me what type of knife this is called or what catagory it falls under?

thanks

There are other knives that are similar to the Ranger RD9, but you won't find one anywhere near the quality of the Ranger RD series for the price range they sell for in my opinion. The Ontario RAT series knives are nice as well and very affordable, and if you can find one that one the now discontinued Becker BK9 is a great knife in this category as well. The best thing about the Ranger RDs is that you can call Justin(owner of Ranger knives) tell him exactly what you want and what you will be doing with the knife, and he will customize it to fit your needs and hands if need be for VERY little extra money and send it right out to you. It would also be helpful if you let us know what it is that you are wanting the knife for, and what you will be doing with it.
Here's my Ranger RD7...I love showing it off!!!:D

Is the black coating really worth having??

Also I hear micarta handles are uncomfortable?

I have been reading its not totally needed if you just keep your blade clean.

I am looking for a solid outdoor, camping, survival, self-defense fixed blade that will last nearly a lifetime.

:D

Well, first of all, no, micarta handles are not uncomfortable, but I had Justin put G10 handles(scales) on the knife you see pictured because I liked the available color combo. As far as coatings go, yes, they do help ward off rust and what not but I don't see them as necessary as you will also notice from the above picture of my RD7, I had him do it in satin finish. After using the knife I simply wash it off and wipe it down with rag that has a couple drops Rem oil on it. That is the great thing about buying a Ranger knife and working with Justin, you can pick whatever kind of handle material you want for very little extra money, and he will also taylor the size of the scales to fit YOUR hand. If you want the blade uncoated and satin finished, no problem, he will do whatever you want. He will even grind the blade differently if you want him to if you need it thinner or a different profile for whatever reason and will do all of this for very little price increase over the standard model and still get right to you in a flash. I promise you Justin can give you what you want in a knife for what you want to spend and it will be personalized for you. Call him, you won't regret it! {507)230-0398

I happen to really like the Cold Steel Recon Scout. Heavier than the Rat-7 and probably heavier than the RD9. I'm sure I'm in the minority but I like the Kraton grip. I sometimes miss not being able to use the butt as a hammer but still a great preformer. Their new carbon steel is very similar to the old 1095, IMO.

Regard

The Recon Scout weighs 15 ounces according to advertisements, my stripped RD7 with G10 scales weighs 19+ ounces, so I would imagine an RD9 ways WAY more than a Recon Scout!
