Just traded off my Nikon film gear for a new Leica M7 and 50mm f2. What a nice rig! I'm still a digital nut (nikon d100) but always wanted a Leica. Since the Nikon film gear was almost never being used anymore, I decided I might as well get something for it while it still had value. Shot my first roll of B/w with the M7. Mostly of my daughter crawling around. Very nice results. All shots were wide open at f2. The rangefinder focus is going to take some getting use to, as well as using framelines instead of wysiwyg on an slr.
All in all I'm very happy with the purchase and outstanding build quality and performance of the body and lens. Now I need to save up for a 35mm lens

Nice choice! I've been thinking about doing exactly the same thing because I've owned EVERYTHING - except a Hasselblad or a Leica.

If it's not a secret, can I ask roughly what you were offered as "trade" value - 50% of what you paid originally for your Nikon, 10% of what you paid....1% of what you paid? I have a Canon 10D and I'm going to trade (or sell?) a MINT Photomic F2A to get my Leica. (and when I say MINT, I mean like NIB mint! )

I've got a Lieca D1 - does that count? I love using it. It does have some limitations in low light and is not 100% guaranteed to get a good shot like some digitals, but this is more than made up for by the brilliant shots it does get.

Cockroachfarm- I went with KBcamera and they gave me Ebay prices less 25%. From my research on prices, they were more generous than that. I'd say I got ebay prices less 15-20%. I could have made a couple hundred more selling myself, but this was just so clean, fast, and hassle free. You'll love the M7 if you get one. It is sooo solid feeling.

Phill- Thank you for the advice, I will look into that before purchasing. What do you think of the tri-elmar 28-35-50 ?

Ming65- It does in my book. Leica glass is Leica glass. :D Do you like it? That's all that counts. Plus, it's one of the most retro looking digicams out there.

Yea I do like it John. Even non-camera literate people seem drawn to it. I like the shape and look of it and it takes brilliant portraits. Non planning on upgrading any time soon.

Last year, a friend of mine worked at an upscale fly fishing store that carried Leica products. My friend used his employee discount to help me buy my Wife a compact Leica camera; probably the least expensive camera Leica makes. Wife loves it, but I'm sure glad I didn't have to pay full retail price on it!

I have a 1950's Leica something or other (III ?) that was my dad's. He bought in in Germany when he was there. I remember people used to walk up to him on the street and want to buy it from him. Last time someone asked he turned down $600 for it.

I supposed I should learn how to use it.

Dave. Man, how cool. It was your dads and he bought it in Germany. What a great family heirloom to pass on. Hope you keep it! I don't think that camera has a lightmeter so you would either have to get a seperate handheld one, or get good at estimating exposures. If it were me I would just get a small inexpensive lightmeter and shoot a roll every now and then. It might not be a bad idea to look into getting it serviced sometime as well. It's refered to as a CLA. Clean, lubricate, and adjust.

I took the cheap route. I got spoiled on cheap Contax gear, so when it was time to try Leica...

I got a new-school Voigtlander Bessa R2 and mounted it with an old-school (1960's) chrome barrel 'Cron. I even got a lightmeter. ;)

Mmmm, delish. The bokeh is so... shivery.

The Bokeh on Angineux of Paris lenses are scary lovely too! Contax rangefinders kick butt. LONG base

I own a Liecaflex SL2 MOT. I Just keep it with all the lenses in a case, it's to heavy and bulky for me to cary around. But it's still a damn good camera.

Panasonic has a digital camera with a fantastic Leica zoom lens.Worth checking out.
