A friend of mine who knows I'm a knifeknut and is trying to get his private pilots licence asked me if there were any folding knives made for pilots. I know that there are several fixed blades out there for survival, but my question to any pilots here is do you need a folder while flying and if so what have you used?

In Canada if you are flying in remote northern airspace you are required by air regs to have survival kit on board. If you go down and live I'm sure a knife could be a life saver. However in the air, I hate to say, in 20 years of flying I have never needed or used a knife. Dave

I'm a pilot, go figure from my name. I carry a Leatherman multi-tool in my flight bag and a Benchmade 710 in my pocket. I am considering an Emerson CQC-10 for a EDC/flying knife, although the 710 is tough to beat as I really like it. Often, when a forced landing occurs, you are seperated from anything that's not attached to you, so a good survival knife in the pocket is preferred. The Ritter Grip is another good choice. If you fly in and around mountains like I do a good survival kit is paramount as is plenty of water.

young in my aviation carreer i worked at an FBO here in aus and there was this guy who used to pick up brand new Mooneys in kerrville and fly them to my place and install a 50 gallon drum and file nonstop to Bangor, Maine and then on over to europe via the Keflavik route. He was a New Zealander and quite an eccentric type,a real loner, very hard to get to know but we became pretty good friends. He always carried a coulple of SAKs and said a few times if he hadn't had them with him he'd have been in real trouble. He NEVER went anywhere without his SAKs! Always had one on his belt and one in his pocket. When i started flying at 17 i tried to follow his lead. He ended up putting one in the north atlantic and was picked up by a russian trawler and retired to snow ski for the rest of his life but i bet he still carries his trusty SAKs!! When i fly now i carry my caly jr. ZDP and a deluxe tinker, a small survival/first aid kit and some water.
