I would like, if possible, to find a supplier who sells smaller sections of tooling veg tanned leather. I don't really need an entire side at the moment, as I only have about 3 or 4 sheaths that need making at the time.

Can anyone suggest a supplier who provides smaller sections of 7/8 or 8/9 oz leather?

Thanks!

Tandy sells half shoulders for $19.95. I am lucky to have a store nearby. I go, sort through the shoulders and buy one or two maybe one out of four trips.

They sell them online I believe as well.

Just did a quick check on ebay, and found a place that sells 8/9 by the square foot, Live Oak/Hermann Oak, for like $11.65 + shipping per sq/ft. Seems a bit expensive, compared to buying a bulk side.

Says the hide has "deep fat wrinkles". How will these wrinkles affect the construction and tooling of a sheath?

That is a pretty steep price. Herman Oak used to be the greatest. Now I hear not so much any more.

You really won't appreciate "deep" fat wrinkles. Buyer beware!

Thanks guys, just went to Tandy's site and seen that they have 8/9 Craftsman Oak double shoulders on sale for $3.49/sq-ft, smallest size is 18, which would be about $63 before shipping. Better than $100+ to start out with.

Couldn't find the half shoulders on their site, but they had a single shoulder listed, unfortunately it isn't heavy enough and its $39.99.

The local tandy shop sells small scrap cuts large enough for most knives at 3-5 bucks apiece. I have 7-8 of these cuts I bought for random projects. It's great-5 bucks worth of materials per sheath is completely reasonable. You might have trouble finding a chunk large enough to fit a larger blade, but I've made 3-4 now that fit 3-4 inch blades just fine.

Gonna grab a piece of 12x24 from usaknifemaker to make a couple sheaths from before I buy a large section, thanks for the suggestion!
