Just wondering, as I love the subtle laminated look and the leek design but would like to snatch up a zdp/titanium one if there are no plans for a laminated version.

This will be my first knife of reputable quality. I've allways had reasonale luck with no name chinese folders, but holding my friends spyderco got me wanting more. I've decided on a zdp leek as kershaw seems up to the same quality and I like the leek design alot better then any of the spydercos offered in zdp.

Incase there are no plans,.. I think it would be a good idea zdp-189 comes in a stampable laminate with 420 steel straight from hitachi and If used with an aluminum or steel handle you could have a nice low priced zdp leek.

also are there any leeks upon which the AO can be disabled? I dont want to scare anyone,..

The term that Kershaw uses is COMPOSITE blade. I talked to Thomas about this a while back and he said that a ZDP composite is something they are considering.

You can disable the AO on any Speedsafe knife, but the blade will not stay closed as well. You have to use the blade tip safety to keep the blade closed.

Here's a link to a thread about the composite blades. Composite Blade Intro

In the second post, Thomas mentions the Leek pictured.
The Leek is a 13C26/ZDP-189 blade

The most important difference is that in a composite blade only the edge would need to be the expensive steel, with the spine of the blade being a less expensive steel (or one with more appropriate qualities for the spine). In a laminated blade the ZDP would run all the way to the spine, using more of the expensive steel. So in theory Composite blades would be more economical even than laminated blades.

Further into the thread he posted some pictures of some Prototype Spec Bumps with some ZDP/ATS-34 Laminated blades. A current production Kershaw with a laminated blade is the SG2 Blur.

drago, at this point we have only used solid ZDP-189, not the laminate. To date we have not ordered any of the laminate either. So no, I don't think you will see this steel in any Kershaw, at least not in the next 12 months.

Now a ZDP (solid) composite blade is another story. We are currently working on a couple models for 08 to go along with the Tyrade which should be out later this fall.

Also there will be a Ti JYD II with a SG2 (laminate) blade due out this fall as well.

Hope that helps.

Thank you everyone very much. Any Idea what the pricetag on a composite leek would be? The tyrade is out of my price range,.. is it because of the composite blade?

Also is it etched or coated in some way? I love the hamonish look but would like it to be a little more subdued would that be possible by say polishing the lower section?

Is the leek one of the upcomming composite models?

or if you can't answer that,. If you were me would you wait or snatch up a TI/zdp leek before they are all gone?

Thomas, please tell me that it will be drilled so the clip can go tip up as well as tip down.

Please. :D

ps Of course since I just bought a ZT 0301, you might want to give me little while to build funds up!
