Any progress on the Spyderbenza?

Years ago, one of the photoshop genius's around here produced some pics of a Spyderbenza and the idea was tossed around of a possible collab model. Has there been any "official" discussion of this? Sal? Come on! The market is certainly there. An "entry level" Sebenza would be hot all by itself but with a SPYDERHOLE opener, I mean come ON... Sheesh. You wouldn't be able to crank them out fast enough! Reeve does the scales (and his freaky smooth bushing system), you do the blades (with your world renowned freaky sharpness - flat ground blade of course). Yowza! We're talking about the grand-daddy mother of all collabs.

This would be what Double Platinum is to Kiss. What Aloha from Hawaii is to Elvis. What Lost Highway is to Hank Senior. What True Grit was to John Wayne. A defining moment. A historical pinnacle. A pocketknife of perfection three decades in the making.

So what's the status on this?

I'd only be interested if it was tip down. :D

Actually, the Ti Framelock Millie (RIL Millie for short) is in production, due to land in a while (probably not this year). They already have pricing information out to dealers and preorders are open.

I'd take a RIL Millie over a Sebenza. :D

I would love to see a collab with Chris Reeve and Spyderco. Not sure what the likelyhood is..but...

The Sage II is freakin close man. I love that thing

So what's the status on this?

It's done and called the Sage 2, model C123TIP. :D Also, it's nothing short of awesome.

(Ok, it's not an actual "collaboration" per se, but it's as close as you're gonna get I think. It's an homage of sorts anyway; even mentions CR by name in the included "about this model" sheet.)

As for the "freaky smooth bushing system", check out the Manix 2. Not exactly identical, but the net effect is much the same.

If you want "freaky smooth bushing system" with zero blade play and eccentric adjustable blade stop to fine tune lock up,look at the Leaf Storm.

You may not like the ergo's and size, but as close as you will ever come to a Sebenza at half the price. Spyderco has executed this one perfectly. A true bushing system is hard to do at this price point.

Guys--- Years back, I'd be all over a FL Spyder. No mo! If my Comp-lock can't cut it, I'll go FB.

So, let me get this straight. You'd expect this collaboration to offer the best features of the Sebenza (meticulously crafted ti scales, massive bushing) plus a "Spydie sharp" S30V full flat grind blade with a Spyderhole opener, at an "entry level" price. Since you're into musical references, I'd suggest this, by Aerosmith. ;)

Seriously, the Sage gives at least 80% of 85%, some would say 90%, of the Sebenza's quality at roughly 50% of the street price. It uses the exact same handle and blade materials, adds the Spyderhole opener, the full flat grind, and Spydie sharpness. Some think it offers superior ergonomics as well. I haven't had the urge to take mine apart, so I can't say for sure, but since the pivot has screw heads on both sides, I suspect it may even use the same style 'bushed" pivot as the Leafstorm and Manix 2. Perhaps Gull Wing, or someone else who's taken one apart, could comment on that. Can say for certain that the action on mine is damn smooth. In any case, if the pivot is not close enough for you, there may even be someone out there who could convert one to an even beefier Reeve style bushing.

To get any closer to the Sebenza, the other option would be to convince Chris Reeve to get Sal's permission to make a run of them with the Spyderhole. But, of course, then you'd be looking at a CRK price tag and, based on what I've heard in the past, Chirs Reeve has no interest in such a project.

On a side note, it would be extremely interesting to see photos of both a small Sebenza and RIL Sage disassembled.

I don't have a small Sebenza to take apart, but I did do a full take down on my Sage II a while back. No pictures though there was a pivot brushing iirc. I think there is one on the Bob T slipit, Manix 2, and Sage II.

Thanks for the headzup on the Sage II. I don't know how that one got past my radar screen. Still hoping for a Sebenza collab with a hole opener. You're right, however, about it not having an "entry level" price tag.
