Any Randall-owners here? Worth the wait...? 3 years right now...

I ordered their most recent catalogue and am overwhelmed by their choice. So many models, so many options... And they're all SO cool.

I'm tempted to order one -got the catalogue within reach? I especially like #1, #5 and new model #27- but since I know I can hardly wait for one WEEK for my next fix to arrive, how 'bout MARCH 2005 -stamped on the back of the catalogue...

Has anyone here actually patiently waited for their Randall or is the general consensus to go the eBay-way (never again for me, thanks) or pay up to three times retail for a new one? Just wondering...

Thanks!

I recently got a Randall 1-7 (its pretty sweet.here is a pic. ) from Nordic Knives . If i remember right I ordered it in Feb of last year and received it in late December. Pretty much when thay said I would. I paid catalog price too. If you check out some of the Randall dealers you can get a knife alot quicker than ordering direct. I've got a #25 on order from Randall due in late 2003, but that was before I learned that dealers could get them quicker.

....check with one of the RMK dealers like Greg Gutcher Sr. at Sullivan's....

You can usually knock off a few years wait that way, or...

Try Rhett/Bruce/& Perry's place over at knifeauctions.net or...

Use the for sale ads here...

I'll venture my opinion, from having gone through a wanting a Randall phase. IMO, the knives are nicely made, but not worth he wait for materials or workmanship alone.

They MIGHT be worth the the wait if they had the exact model you couldn't get elsewhere and/or possessing something with the Randall name was important to you.

YMMV.

I have wanted a Randall "Astro" since about 1975. Forgot about knives for a number of years. Now, I still want one. Will I ever use it? Do I "need" it?

The 3 year wait is just that much more time for me to enjoy the inevitability that I will eventually have one.

Also, when it arrives, if I am cash-strapped, I can always sell it and break-even at the worst.

Dave Harvey (owner) is a first class guy to deal with at Nordic also.

Pricing is fair on Randall's for handmade/semi-custom/mostly-production. But a long wait for semi-custom out of O1 or 440B? Hmmm.

I've been tempted numerous times to get a Randall. I have always resisted when I saw the wait, knowing I could pretty much sketch out a design with no restrictions and have one of the better makers do it out of say CPM 3V or A2. I would probably pay more to do this, but not a lot more. And it would be my design and a real custom. Until you've collaborated on a design of your own with a custom maker, it's hard to describe the feeling and the satisfaction you derive from said process. Such knives are rarely sold. Mine haven't been, will probably be handed down to grandchildren someday.

Meanwhile, I've done some further web-browsing and found a few on-line stores -among these was Nordic Knives- that do look interesting. I am however still in the first phase of the "Randall-need" and who knows, it just might just fade away soon. I sure don't like the premium I'd have to pay to get a popular model like the #1 or #5 within one year.

And it's true that there's a brand-coolness-factor here that, by nature, is irrational. So... I'll ponder on.

Any more reactions still welcome!

Nordic and the others mentioned are good for sure, but since you bought up the model #1, Randall's all time biggest seller, i have seen two of them sell for $275 NIP in the for sale forums, just put in some time there and you might get what you want sooner.

I have purchased several on EBay without any problems. You probably pay a premium, but you don't have to wait for years. It's worked for me.

Check www.jerryspawnandgun.com. They stock Randalls, and apparently at less than catalog prices.

I have a Model 14 the my parents got for me for graduation. I love it. If you want to talk about full customs, Randalls are not it. But there is something comforitng in knowign taht some of these designs (like the model 1 you said you liked) have been through every war in the last fifty-plus years and performed excellently. I can't ahve mine here because it is "too long" but when I was home for Christmas, I wore it around the house I liked it so much. Truly unique in the world of knives, and not taht expensive. Also, a lot of custom makers are backed up for a long itme, too. My plan is to order at least one a year, starting this year, and then I can give myself a birthday present every year.

Good luck.
