Any reason not to pick up a Native 3?

Found a Native 3 with S30V steel at a local pawn shop. I'm considering trading two or three of my entry level knives for it rather than paying the $30 sticker price. It doesn't look to be in great shape so definitely a user, but I haven't handled it yet to check lockup and blade movement. I'm not even sure if it is plain or spyder edge. Any thoughts?

The Native is a good knife. If it is solid and not over sharpened, the $30 is probably fair and just about entry level price as-is.
Even if it is a little loose, Spyderco may be able to tighten it up for you, and sharpen the spyder edge if it has one.

I hadn't even considered a factory resharpen. That makes things a bit more tempting. I'm planning on trading a Case Peanut (it's got bad juju and it bit me) and either a SOG Twitch II, CRKT M21-12g, or a Byrd Crossbill with a combo edge.

I totally would, then send back to factory to see what they can do.

Sounds like they're getting the best end of the deal for the Native.

I was thinking the peanut and probably one of the others. I haven't carried any of the three in years, but they are still better than most of what the pawn shop has.

Ooooh, good point. I'll be cautious. My first purchase on the bay was a counterfeit Spyderco Spin. I kept it as a reminder to always be sure of what I'm buying before pulling the trigger. Sometimes I get a bit excited and pull the trigger before I'm ready.

Buy the native and sell the lot of entry level knives here for $40.
If boxes are included, he may not break $30 after shipping.

Oh, and a knife that bit you doesn't have "bad juju" it is now "Your Knife"...

As far as your original question, I personally wouldn't, as the Native platform doesn't fit my hand all that well.

Well most of my collection has bitten me at one point or another which is to be expected. This peanut came to me by way of my father in law, who is a piece of work. I'll be glad to be shot of it. I'd give it to someone I know but I want it far away. It biting me while getting cleaned for sale is just proof of it's malice.

Unless it keeps randomly ending up places where you KNOW you did not put it and carves eerie messages about your demise in the walls... then it has "bad juju"

If it's a Native 3 with S30V I'd wager it's either counterfeit or a seriously rare knife. The Native 3 was made in VG-10, the 4 was S30V.

Made the trade. Swapped the tainted peanut, the Byrd Crossbill, and the SOG Twitch II for a Native FRN (Native 1?) with S30V and $10 cash.

I’m fairly happy with it so far. It needed a good scrubbing and plenty of lube but now the action and lockup are good.

Someone boogered up a sharpening job so a reprofile is in order. I’m considering polishing the hollow of the grind to take out the scratches but since it will be a work knife I’m not too bothered.

Here it is as she looked from the store. They didn’t even clean it.

The clip has come off and soon I’ll add a lanyard or maybe round the corners and polish. Bonus mini dachshund.

Edited to say that I suspect I did not embed the photos correctly. First attempt; please bear with me...

I would have offered $25 cash and not given up all those other pieces. The SOG and CRKT are basically junk but put all 4 together as a lot on the Exchange and you could probably get $40. Either way, looks good and after it's been worked on a bit I bet it will serve you well, only concern would be the condition of the lock back spring.

Thanks DNAIrradiator, I looked around but couldn't get it straight. I'll be sure to reference this again should I get a shot at another Native.

All in all I'm fairly pleased with the knife and the trade. I know the pawn shop came out with a much better deal but all four had been sitting in a box for years without use. I do still have the CRKT, which has held up better than I would have expected, and it will probably find itself in a glove box soon.

The Native is fine other than the edge and blade finish being marred by a pull through sharpener. The lock up is tight, no blade play side to side and just a touch up and down but that is back-locks for you.

It will be perfect for beating on around the house. I don't personally abuse my knives, but my dad never seems to have his and is not as careful if you know what I mean. I've been carrying my Wave when he comes over and he hasn't hurt it too much yet...
