Any restaurants with sharp knives out there.

I never try to use the "house knives" when eating at a restaurant- just out with my pocket knife and away I go. Have any of you found restaurants that give patrons knives that can actually cut the butter- let alone a steak??

I've been to a nice sit-down restaurant (DJ's in Roanoke, VA) that gave you sharp knives, but for the most part, no. First, they buy REALLY cheap knives. Second, there is a massive liability risk in having sharp knives because patrons might sue you if they cut themselves, and the restaurant isn't going to want to risk losing someone, or paying someone specifically qualified, to having to sharpen the knives. Cheap, dull serrated knives meant to tear the steak apart seem to be the order of the day at most restaurants I've been to.

Giving people dull knives might be the safest thing in our overly litigious society, at least legally.

Anyone on this forum most likely knows that a sharp knife is much safer than a dull one. A cut done with one or two easy swipes has got to be safer than sawing back and forth with a glorified butter knife.

Of course, my mother promptly cut herself after I sharpened all her kitchen knives on my Sharpmaker. That's my mom for ya, LOL.

Anyways...no, I've never been given a decent knife at any restaurant. I've eaten at places from Florida to Alaska and no luck.

I usually order chicken at places, so the knife they give me, or the edge of the fork is good enough. The only time I have to use my own knife is when I eat steak somewhere and usually the knives do well enough for me because I eat my steak rare. If not, I pull out the old Opinel No. 8. The waiter/waitress gets freaked out because of this. "OMG WHATS THE MATTER WITH OUR KNIFE CAN WE GET YOU ANOTHER ONE OMG I'M SO SORRY!"

It's very common in other countries to use your own knife to eat with. This country gets freaked out and confused at this.

I've never received a sharp knife at a restaraunt, regardless of my order. Sometimes I'll use my SAK if the meat is putting up a good fight, which usually gets me some stares and a few whispers. Maybe I should use a Battle Mistress instead.

Forget lawsuits, think about the theft. Good knives would not only cost five times as much, they'd disappear five times as fequently too.

heh, i never thought of that

personally, i never use an EDC to eat with... how many of you guys do?

I cut some home-grilled steak with my EDC at the time and the juices stained the blade! It was AUS8 and I couldn't get the stain out. Oh, well.

Is it even practical to expect a sharp knife? Most steaks are served on hard ceramic plates. Wouldn't this tend to flop the edges or otherwise dull the knife fairly quick? This is one reason I use the wives wooden cutting board in the kitchen, rather than the pretty tile one.

[warning rant ahead] Besides who the heck cares about a sharp knife in a restaurant anyway? I'm usually trying to track down the salt, pepper, forks, napkins, waiter/waitress, a refill of tea, ketchup (but NOT for a steak heaven forbid) or a combination of the above. In a restaurant a good waitress is worth a lot more than a sharp knife. Hmmm I suppose you can guess I've been out to eat recently. It does build character however to remain patient and cool with them I suppose.[rant mode off]

Treat them with respect, but tip (Or don't) accordingly. That's my philosophy. :)

Someone seems to go out of their way to make my visit pleasant, generous tip. If I forget who my waitress is because them checking up on me is that rare, I might see if I have any pennies about my person. If I'm feeling generous. ;)

Many of the better restaurants that I patronize give serrated knives that do the job just fine. However the Chinese (and American) Buffet Houses give the butter knives, and that's when I don't mind using one of my EDC's. One time, the waitress at a Chinese Buffet House thought using my use of my EDC Stockman was a good idea.

I eat every meal with my EDC knife at home or public. Out comes the crkt m16.
Never received a sharp knife anywhere.

I can remember only once... I usually take Mrs. Mongo out to a REALLY nice (read expensive) restaurant a couple of times a year for a couple of special occasions like wedding aniversary, New Year's eve, etc. We have a fine restaurant right in my little hometown burb that actually had a razor sharp fixed blade Laquiole (sp?) style steak knife. Mrs. Mongo did a lot of  at me while I was waxing poetic about the fine quality knife. I was durn near tempted to take it home with me!:D The rest of the times all I see are the usual crappy dull SERRATED ones they give you as their "steak" knives.:grumpy:

Never had a particuarly sharp knife at a restaurant. Just last night I had a well-cooked steak that would've come apart if I had blown on it hard. But the serrated knives they had did a decent job on bread as well. Maybe I'll start bringing stacks of paper and cardboard to do sharpness tests at the table.

I carry a carbide pocket sharpener and while we are waiting for the food, I sharpen my date's restaurant supplied knife, then sharpen mine. Sometimes I will use my Spyderco Military EDC, but there are times that I don't due to the sheeple factor or if it's a higher end place.
