Any rimfire/smallbore competition shooters here?

This does in a way pertain to survival. You see, shooting competitions greater hone your shooting skills to better help you in times when you might not be 100% or have limited time to pull a trigger. With the skills developed, it takes less effort to make a valuable shot thus making survival easier as long as you have ole' trusty with you.

That's my rationalization. Really I just wanted to ask here since you guys are all my homeboys and other than the RAT forum and the Fiddleback forum, this is the only section I look at.

So, do we have any rimfire/smallbore competition shooters here. I'm trying to get into it, but there's not a lot I'm finding in my area of GA. Some stuff goes on at Riverbend and Gold City from what I've been able to find. If you're a shooter, how'd you get into it, what kind of comps do you do, and what's your tack hammer of choice? Also, if anyone ever wants to meet up at Bulleye Marksman Gun Club in Cumming, GA, I shoot there quite often. Short range, but nice folks up there.

I used to shoot smallbore silhouette, shot a Browning buckmark and a Ruger 10/22.

Your right it is a great tune up for hunting, I highly recommend everyone to get involved in their local shooting sports. Silhouette shooters tend to be a bit more relaxed group than the BR guys, at least in my club. I have moved and haven't gotten into anything here, but plan on it. Chris

First, I agree completely that friendly competitive shoots will hone your skills, besides getting to meet fellow competitors and swap notes, experiences and lies.:D

I belong to a local rod & gun club that has a great range...but they've gotten a little lax lately about setting up competitive shoots. I think I'm going to have to join the board of directors and crank them up. Bunch of old farts :D

They used to have "pin shoots", which is pistol shooting at lined-up bowling pins at about 50 feet. It's timed, and that can be fun. It is a kind of practical shooting, as in you have to swing from target to target and knock them over as quickly as possible.

My favorite .22lr shooters are a Ruger Standard with a 6" barrel and a CZ452 bolt action with a 5-shot magazine.

I shot smallbore 3 position for the University of Michigan Rifle Team while I was in undergrad. We were only a club level team and most of the schools we competed against had varsity teams, scholarships and equipment sponsorship. We were a ragtag bunch compared to most of the other schools, but we did alright. A few kids had their own rifles, but the team had quite a few and over my years I shot a Remington (can't remember the model) as well as an OLD Anchutz.

We all had fun, the range we shot at was like 40 minutes from campus though, so we only got out a couple times a week to practice. I too would like to get back into it, but haven't really found any good clubs around where I am, if I had to drive an hour it's very unlikely that I would go shooting often.

Never saw a 452 that wasn't a bughole shooter out of the box, mine is phenomenal. I think I have more money in just the barrel on my 10/22 and truth to be told, the cz will probably outshoot it out of the box. Chris

I was smart when I built my 10/22. I kept it simple and uncostly. Rugerr 10/22T blued version with the laminated stock, Volquartsen bolt charging handle and extended mag release, Volquartsen stabilization module, Harris bipod, Tuffer buffer, and a nifty scope. Kept the dollar amount pretty low.

...ok. The truth is I just ran out of money before I started buying everything that Tony Kidd makes.:o Ideally, I'd like to have a complete Kidd built rifle sitting in a Bell and Carlson stock. That's my dream machine. That, and I'd like to have a fancy pants Anschutz.

I used o shoot rimfire silhouette competition hen I was younger... I live in a rural area and the local Rod and gun club hosted these monthly... It was allot of fun...

Kidd makes good stuff. Mine is sort of a mish mash, I have an all power custom trigger, Clarke midweight 22" barrel, and a walnut sporter stock that has been full length bedded including the action. Chris

I shot three position smallbore at Ohio State (back in the mid 80's). It was a way for a farm boy from northcentral Ohio to be able to shoot for recreation in the middle of the big city. Met some great people, got to travel a little, got to watch my grades drop......oh well it was a great time.

It did help hone my shooting skills, concentration, trigger squeeze, follow through. Coach Master Sgt. M C Greenway, USArmy, much gratitude to you sir

I took 4th place in the California 22lr benchrest championship a couple years back. Missed 3rd by two points (out of a few hundred). Had a custom rig back then that could do 1/10" groups @ 50 yards all day long.

Now I just have my trusty CZ452. Very accurate.

I shot rimfire silhouette years ago. I shot with a Remington 541T. It was a popular model in the 1980s. Nowadays it seems to be the CZ 452, especially in Hunter Rifle class. All of them are super squirrel rifles. Shooting off hand at long range (100m) and small targets really sharpens those shooting skills for squirrel hunting.

I shot airgun Field target competitions, and 22 competitions for a while.. May get back into them at some point...

I shot NRA four-position indoor smallbore for a few years in a local tri-county league. It is a great experience. The equipment is expensive but you can recoup your investment easily if you get out of it and sell. (I actually sold my stuff for more than I paid for it, after shooting for almost three seasons.)

I started with a Winchester Model 52D (loaned to me by the club), then bought my own Anschutz Match 54, leather shooting jacket, shooting pants, glove, mat, etc.

Check the NRA (I hope you're a member!) for information on local clubs that may be involved in league shooting.

Stay sharp,
desmobob

Our high school had a rifle team. Can you imagine that! That was back in 1983! I think even a mere mention of it today would warrant expulsion.
It was some great times though. Our coaches had all the equipment and after my buddy and I got to near expert level, he let us use his Remington rifle. It sure was a beauty.
Anyway...I got to expert in about 3 years and then quit.
I really wished I hadn't because there was a coaching position that was open at a local gun club and they offered the position to my buddy and me.
He took it for a while, but because he didn't have a car yet, he had to quit.
I discovered girls and the rest is history :-)
I fondly remember after each meet, my dad would ask for my targets and I would show him. He would give me advise and compliment my accuracy. It was pretty unbelievable would we could do with peep sights!

I shot 50ft Rimfire Bullseye as a kid. Loved it. Bone stock Ruger MKII 6in model.

Competition makes anyone better at anything :)

A local shooter that got me interested in joining IDPA also got me interested in Hunter Pistol silhouette. I shot my first HP smallbore match in September and loved it!
I use a Thompson Center Contender with a 10" .22LR match barrel and a 3-9X rifle scope. You use an odd position of holding the gun up to your head close like a rifle. Got another match tomorrow morning and I also plan on shooting regular Hunter Pistol with a 10" .22WMR barrel.

Ain't that the truth? This CZ452 was recommended to me highly before I bought it...and I am recommending it highly to anybody now.

I owned a 10/22 years ago, loved it, trying to remember now why I ever got rid of it. A great all-around rifle. However, it couldn't match the CZ for 100 yard fly swatting.

I know, a lot of 10/22 owners will climb all over me for saying that and tell me about their hotted-up mods :D

Just my humble opinion guys, based on my own experience

Sounds fun , to the CZ shooters what ammo does it seem to like.

Mine shoots everything better than average, Winchester Dynapoints or CCI Minimags for hunting and Remington/Eley EPS for target. I know that the dynapoints aren't made anymore, when I found out they were discontinued I kinda stocked up, we won't mention how many I have. :o Chris

I shot on my high school rifle team. We shot 3-posistion smallbore (.22) and 2-posistion (standing/prone) air rifle. I was captain or co-captain all 4 years. Would've went to college for it but I went on a football scholarship instead. I still try to get into a few comp's here and there, but I mostly shoot for fun now.
