Seriously considering the VG-10 Rock. No chance to handle one. Can anyone chime in?

Curious about:

Durability. 1/8 inch thick stock on a flat ground knife this size has me wondering. Any batonning?

Thumb ramp. Very pronounced. How does it fare in handle only and choked up choil work?

Sheath. Very high carry. Adjustment options?

Anything else.

Thx.

Interesting. 77 views in the Spyderco forum and no one has one? Cant find many reviews online either.

My cousin has one and he likes it quite a bit. I don't have one myself though so I can't offer any firsthand experience or further advice.

Cool. Ill prolly pull the trigger on one anyway. Im in love with the looks for some reason. Dread sharpening the recurve tho. And that sheath is a heinous monstrosity.

Mine is a factory second, which came without a sheath. Like the Rock Salt, I had to grind off the last swell at the butt to make room for my little finger when not using the choil. Having seen Ed handling one of his designs in a video I understand why that is. Apparently my hands are a finger width wider than his (yes, I have large hands) so everything with "Schempp" on the blade has a handle too short for my comfort. As far as durability goes, I personally wouldn't worry about it, but then I prefer thin blades. At an average of 0.035" behind the edge bevel, it doesn't really qualify as thin in my book. The recurve is not that pronounced, and all but the first half inch by the plunge could easily be sharpened on a flat benchstone. As for beating it with a stick, I suppose you could if you know what you are doing. I also suppose you could break it if you don't. Frankly, I don't see the point of having a knife I have to hammer through what I want to cut.

I've had mine for a couple of years, but I haven't used it at all. I just don't have any call for a blade that large in my day to day activities.

Good to know. I got smallish medium hands, which puts me in the lucky range of handle grip compatibility. My user fixed blade was going to be a Ratmandu, but my recent cycling back to Spyderco obsession reminded me about the Rock. Very strange for me too. The idea of a stainless fixed blade has always massively turned me off. Actually my folders would all be simple carbon steel too if i had the choice.

Im really hoping funds will open up ASAP. With Spyderco stuff, theres always that paranoia they will cease production on any given model. I feel pretty confident the Ratmandu will be offered for a long time. How does one procure Spyderco seconds?

One drives or flies to Golden, Colorado in late November, sits all night in the freezing cold with a bunch of other nut cases, stands in line for hours and then fights through a crowd of frenzied shoppers to grab what one can at the Spyderco Factory Outlet sale. At least, that's how I did it.

I have a Rock Salt and I have taken it on my weeklong backcountry canoe/camping trip every year for the last 6-7 years. I think it is a very nice, long blade for the amount that it weighs and I find the kukri shape very useful for light to medium chopping. I have never batoned with it but I don't baton with any knife (I also carry a folding saw).

It is true that the sheath is not great but it hasn't failed me yet after years of considerable use. I find the ergonomics are bang on for my medium sized hands, but everyone is different of course. Last year I thought I lost it and actually lost a night's sleep worrying over it. We were triumphantly reunited the next day but I wouldn't have hesitated to replace it with a Rock, if I had to. I have owned a lot of knives (been hanging around here too long!) but this is one of my favourites. Give one a try, it's a nice piece.

Sweet. Ill meet you out front in ten months with hot beverages.

It may be a long wait. They've been having the Sale every other year for the last six years, and they had one last year. If there isn't enough stock to satisfy the estimated demand, they don't hold a sale.

Just picked one up. Beautiful knife and light. Sheath sucks hard. Will be looking for a custom shortly

I've had a Rock Salt for several years. It's really an ideal "combat knife", oddly enough. I don't ever baton knives except for test purposes.

The Rock/Rock Salt are compromise knives, thicker than machetes, thinner than heavy choppers.
