Hello all,
I was just wondering if any of you are sabre lovers? I love the American Civil War era cavalry sabres.

I really like the 1860 heavy cavalry saber, myself. They're getting hard to find, these days. Every antique dealer looks 'em up on the internet and prices them at the top of the value range. I found a pretty beat up one in a store in Montana, and the seller wanted $850 for it. It was worth maybe $300, tops. I guess I'll have to make one myself if I want one...

Hello Jim-Frank,
If you just want a good sabre to practice with and possibly spar, reenact, etc, then get a good repro. There are some out there that are not too bad. Go to http://sbgswordforum.proboards70.com/index.cgi and check out the sword reviews forum and others and you will see where I and some other "sabreites" posted some things about our repro sabres. I have a new MRL 1860 sabre and it is a well made, beautiful, tight sabre. It is only $89.00 as opposed to Ames Sword Co's $175.00. And they are identicle in looks and measurments, and quality, etc..
Take care,
Dave

The Model 1860 was not a "Heavy Cavalry Saber," it was designated as a "Light Cavalry Saber." If you want the heavy version, you need to go for the Model 1840, affectionately known to the troops as "Old Wristbreaker."

Speaking of sabers, does anybody here have any experience with the cold steel 1830 napoleon saber? http://www.coldsteel.com/88ns.html

Any particular quality issues that need to be known about? Also, does it have a sharpened false edge like the British 1796 light cavalry saber?

Thanks a bunch.

Interesting question Grey, i hope someone here responds because i would like to know myself. It is a beautiful sword.

I have an old "WristBreaker" Calvary Sword I picked up years ago. It has a very old hand engraved inscription that that is hard to read indicating the owners name and "Shiloh". It needs a good cleaning but I have never done anything except put a little oil on it. Im afraid I might devalue it if I tried to clean it up. The handle has been rewraped in leather. Otherwise its original. Someday I will have to post some photos. Anybody have an idea of what it might be worth???

Anywhere from ten bucks to ten thousand (literally). Call my brother Rafael @ Shiloh Relics 731-689-4114. He sells civil war relics for a living & he is an appraiser on "Antique Roadshow". He can give you an honest estimate on what it is worth.
