Hi

I have lurked around these forums for a while, but haven't seen a whole lot of discussion about scuba diving - when it comes to gadgets and gear (knives, torches, etc) it seems like a pretty gear intensive sport.

I have just started to learn to dive on the south coast of the North Island of New Zealand - water temperature a balmy 12-14 celsius at the moment (55F).

Does anyone else dive? What gear do you use? What light works best for you? What dive knife? Any recommendations?

Regards
Sean

Hi

I use a Oceanic Data mask, Pelican 2010 recoil LED light and Carson Dive knife (Buck makea acopy of thisknife ....a tanto format) Had a look at HID lights but as I prefer to spent on top dive gear, the light get's used infrequently so cannot warrant that expense.

BTW, we dive mostly in Mozambique and water is around the 26-29 deg C mark.

thanks for all the suggestions... Aubrey, i'd be very curious to know what you think of the Oceanic datamask. Will look into the H1 blades. Thanks again!

Spyderco Salts~ on a lanyard is a good basic starting point.

Optional devices that are "mission specific" might be the BKT TacTool (They used to make them chromed), or one of those Russian Titanium crowbars. Unless you are supported by a taxing agency, skip the high speed stuff like http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Beshara-XSF-1,703,35.htm unless you want to impress the chicks.

Lights are very much so mission specific. I never get in the ocean without at least a Night Rider head mount rig and one last ditch light, like a 4 C cell UK tucked away and only for emergencies. The rest is highly dependent upon water conditions and intended applications. There are actually some usable LED units, something I wouldn't have said three years ago. Is rechargability an issue or can you do take all the batteries along that you'll need on a multi day outing?

Oceanic Datamask? Give it time, they're priced insanely high and soon to be outclassed.

I tested the prototypes.
