Ok, since there are no cutlery shops near Wilmington I have changed my plans

I am the youth director at our church and we are taking the youth to Emerald Isle in a couple of weeks for a weekend at the beach. While I'm there, I would love to look at some knives and maybe even buy one. Anyway, I was wondering if there are any places I should be on the lookout for. Thanks.

My parents live on the other end of the island from where you will be and I've spent a good deal of time there. As far as I know there are no knife shops in that area. There is a gun shop in Morehead City which isn't too far away and they may carry a few knives. There are various fishing tackle and sporting good stores as well but most won't stock anything unusual.

There is a nautical store in Beaufort called "Scuttlebutt" that carries a few knives but as i recall they are mostly Sypderco stuff.

The only thing I can think of is you might consider taking a jaunt over to Jacksonville. Since its a military town it's three major industries are topless joints, used car dealerships and pawn shops. You might find something nice if you search those pawn shops and actually Jacksonville might have a knife shop of some kind as well. Thats the closest place I can think of that might have anything. You'll most likely be going through Goldsboro as well and it may be worth your time to do a yellow pages check for a knife shop there as well.

Oh, and there is an Army/Navy Store in Havelock that carries knives. You might try there.

One last place, but I wouldn't hold out much hope for quality here, there is a Flea Mall on Highway 70 in Morehead City that is open on weekends. There are usually knife dealers set up there.

Now for the important stuff...where are you going to eat?

Some suggestions: If closer to Wilmington you might try Pearl's for seafood. My cousin's husband owns it and its really good. You've got to love a place that has a plate called "The Barge".

In Emerald Isle or there abouts...try The Crab Shack and if you make it down the beach a ways to Beaufort, Clawson's on the waterfront is really good.

Mr.Blackadder, thanks for all the info. You are very helpful to me. Take care.

Hey, wasn't Pearl's also the once called the Charthouse a long time ago? I used to live in Castle Hayne and eat there a few times since it's in nearby Wrightboro. I think the Charthouse closed down and later was bought and became Pearl's. Is that right?
The Charthouse was good but I don't think I've tried out Pearls. What a minute.... isn't Pearl's owned by Dan Inman who also runs another business in this area? I digress.

Regarding knife shops up around Emerald Isle... I agree that the Jacksonville Pawn shops may up your chances of finding a treat because of the military traffic. There is a gun store in Morehead City called Hardesty's Gun Shop. It's right on the main drag (Hwy 70) and they have some Benchmade knives and some BK&T and some ontario stuff but they are really proud of their inventory. Meaning the last time I was there about four months ago they had a BK&T Patrol Machete for....$ 140... Yikes!

Let's just put it this way. I travel all over southeast NC for my job, which affords me the opportunity to find out about all kinds of potential B&M's, and I obtain
99% of my edged tools through the internet.
Hope this helps!

Sincerest Regards,

Sorry the long post.

Hardesty's Gun Shop was the one I was thinking of in Morehead City. I agree that their prices tend towards the high side. I did get a good deal from him on my Sig 220 though.

Emerald Isle.....its way across the sea where the best beer in the world is brewed!!

Yeah...wrong Emerald Isle....but I can assure you that there is a port or two even in that smaller lesser known EI where one can get a pint or two of Guiness down ya.

Michael,

Ya bastid! Emerald Isle is my home away from home. Denna and I may be heading down tonight (I guess I should tell her) for the weekend

The only place that you'll find knives is Hardesty's. They have Benchmade, CRKT, and some others. Prices are high (read retail), but maybe strike up a conversation with Jerry or his wife

They're very nice people and his wife is getting into knives, so have fun. BTW, Edgeworks Mfg. is down there in Jacksonville (the kydex guys). Give Scott Evans (Gadgets and Gear moderator on www.thefiringline.com and owner of Edgeworks) a call and he'll be happy to give yoiu a tour of the factory. Scott may also know of some secret knife shops that I don't know about. Maybe I'll see ya if we make it down. If you go out out eat down there, try Whidden Landing (lotsa good food for the money), Bushwhackers (decent), Fairway (great food), or Big Oak Drive-In for BBQ. Email me and I'll give ya my cell number.

Later,
Chris

Alright, my slack butt didn't read you're entire post thoroughly. Denna and I may still be there "in a couple of weeks".
