Just curious. I don't think I have ever used a knife made of either one. Good for utility hunter? Camper? Thin slicer?

Was 80CrV2 specifically made for knifemaking?

They can both make great knives, 80CrV2 is a little more complicated but it's not clear to me it's really an advantage for most knife tasks (but then I've only just started learning about this stuff within the last few months.

As far as I'm concerned, any of the simple carbon steels optimally heat treated would make a fine utility knife, hunter, camper, or thin slicer. I have one knife in 80CrV2 that takes a fine edge and seems to do a good job being tough. My favorite kitchen knife is 1075, and I don't have any problems with that in the slicing department.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know how I got the idea that 1084 and 80CrV2 were similar.
