I am a big 1911 fan and collector, but I am also a big Smith & Wesson Revolver Fan and collector, especially J-frames. Well, I just obtained one of my must have pieces today so I thought I would share it with any of ya'll here who like old Smiths. It is a very early, three digit serial #, Pre Model 40, Flat latch Centennial. Please forgive the picture quality as I didn't take them, but I will try to put some better ones up tomorrow. This picture doesn't do it justice, as it is VERY nice and everything is there, even the little pin for the grip safety, as well as the original box and paperwork..I'm a happy camper!

Very nice !

I understand S&W is going to reintroduce this very gun.

And I THINK........it'll be without the silly key lock safety thing. Let's hope !

Saaaweet Gun! Yeah, 1911 guys like us carry and love our slabsides but also love our S&W wheelguns. Wonder why that is. My hide out has and always will be my S&W 442 Cent. with either Hogue wood finger grips or Secret service grips. I switch back and forth. Dunno why I havent found favor with any other match ups. I was tempted once to buy and old Colt Agent,If I find one in good condition I am not saying I wont..

My very first Issued weapon (I am dating myself here) was believe or not a SS Detonics Combat Master. Ended up Buying it then traded it for a HK P7. Worst trade I ever made. Those guns were nothing but boat anchors,IMHO. At the time I was thinking, "cool gun! So James Bond euro...." Stupid. Now it is Les Baers,Wilsons and Springfields. Looking at a nice Kimber combat lately. Havent decided yet.

Yeah, anyways...been through the Sig-Glock-Walther syndrome years ago and was always let down. Some of those guns are plenty nice, dont get me wrong.Sigs shoot real straight (P220) but the whole caliber shuffle is dumb.It will only be .45 only in my autos,357,38 cal for me in my S&W revolvers. I owned a Dan Wesson once,it was great but could not find a good holster.

Those wood grips look like they could tell a story of comfort.

Anyways, awesome find,great pic!

Oh yeah, Later in life when someone would want me to issue me the flavor of the year euro auto and I could not carry a 1911, I always said NO Thanks, I Have a S&W 686 Stainless in four inches with like 10 different holsters I could qual with blindfolded. ;)

Nice one. I love the Smiths. I tend to gravitate toward the stainless ones with hogue grips, but I don't think you could go wrong with any of them.....well.....I did have occassion to shoot the new scandium .44 at the range about three months ago.....I will never, ever, not even close, no way, no how, ever pull the trigger on one of those with full house loads again. It kills on both ends. Looks nice though.

Those were very popular numbers when I started in police work; easy to carry in a pocket without snagging anything. You saw a lot of J-frames with "dehorned" hammers as well.

I had a rather odd one; the 3" "bull" barrel number with the square butt. Nice little weapon, and a tad more comfortable to shoot.
I too remember shooting one of the aluminum-framed jobs with full-house loads; nasty...

Tolly, thats a VERY nice piece!

I've always loved and preffered a good Smith and Wesson revolver over any other handgun. My old model 10 is a bit over 40 years old, but still shoots great. God alone knows how many rounds have been down that skinny barrel, with zero failures.

For my snubbies like my old blued chiefs special, I found they like the heavy slow load better. For the last 30 years I've been handloading a hard cast 150gr semi-wadcutter over 2.8 grains of Bulleye. Works great out of a 2 inch barrel.
