Any solution for vertical blade play on a PM2?

I picked up a PM2 camo/black blade a few weeks ago. I have not used it for anything but cutting paper and it's been carried a few days. But it has a little bit of vertical blade play. I noticed it right when I got it, but the shop I bought it from went out of business (thus a pretty good deal on the knife!) I Hate to complain about a spyderco because I have NEVER had a problem with any of my spyderco knives, and love all of them. It is certainly useable, but it is my first compression lock and when I choke my thumb up on the jimping over the opening hole, I can feel it and I can't help but worry that it will close on my hand, and sever all of my fingers cleanly through the bone:D Will this be fixed with a trip to spyderco or should I just make it a user (was gonna keep it in the drawer) and accept that Spydercos are simply too awesome to fail on me. Anyone else have this problem? or could you possibly direct me to a thread where this has been addressed, couldn't find one searching. Sorry, I really hate complaining about this, it is one of the most comfortable, promising Spydercos, and I love all of my Spydies, but I want them all to be perfect. Nothing but respect for all at Spyderco, and the forums.. please tell me if I am just an idiot. Anyone else have play with the compression lock?

first of all, it's not gonna slip. Second, make sure your hardware isn't loose. Mostly the stop pin screws

A few years back, I picked up a (very) used Yojimbo that had really been beat. There was a lot of vertical play when it was locked open, but even in that condition, there was no chance of it folding in use, even if I was doing something stupid. You'd have to tear the stop pin out of the liners and bend the locking tab straight up to make the lock fail. I couldn't do that without a vise and a good-sized cheater bar.

I repaired the Yojimbo, it now locks up better than the NIB example I have, so I'm sure Spyderco can take care of the problem if you send it in. Personally, I think people make way too much of a little play.

Yupp... Like what could most people be cutting? I use my blades a lot. I cut cardboard all day at work but how much pressure does that put on the spine? Only my grip pressure. If its a user use it and beat it. If you're the type to have safe queens the they should be perfect cuz that's their purpose. I'm sure spyderco will take care of you tho. Good luck!

Lock play once bothered me, but now I'm much more focused on lock dependability.

From what I've heard from friends, if the comp-lock is within specifications, it shouldn't have play.
It's a solid lock. (Unlock many lockbacks which usually have some play, in my experience.)

Aside from the pointers here, I have nothing else to offer.
Good luck! ;)

Thanks for the input, good points indeed. I made too big of a deal of it. It is more than capable of anything I can throw at it, and I do love the thing. I have just had such solid lockup (and general QC) on my other spydies, I got a bit worried.. Not sure if I will send it in, everything is tight, and it is a really fantastic blade... thanks much. I suppose now is when I man up and use the blade for what it was made for.

I own - couple Para2s :D, no bladeplay. Maybe rotate thie stop. Pin a little, check the body screws and pivot are all tight.

Rev Devil Good Call!!!! Everything was tight, but I just rotated the stop pin and it is almost perfect now. At first a little slow to open, but then I loosened 'em just a hair. I think I'll carry it a while, use it, and then when I have to take it apart to clean it, put some flitz on and clean the stop pin and tighten it in in the right spot. It was the store display model, maybe it was abused by a customer:mad: and just needs some TLC. Thanks!!!

You might be careful. Polishing the stop pin could make it more loose.

Does physically moving the locking bar to the right as you look at it from the top make it tighten up or is there no change?

My understanding is to either send the knife into Spyderco and let the experts fix the lock or turn the knife into a fixed blade by welding it all together.

6 year necro. Not with Spyderco but with a folding knife of another brand, disassembling, cleaning up, lubing did the magic.

He said he knew it was an old thread. He hasn't posted enough to know all the tricks, but he did manage to get a response that was helpful from a newer thread he also bumped.
