Any Sony PSP reviewers out there?

I'm somewhat impressed with the number of movies that are now available for the PSP. How does this device rate as portable movie player for the international air traveler? Specifically I'm wondering about battery life (how many movies could you watch on an 11 hour transatlantic flight), and would the standard array of international electric outlet adapters be sufficient to allow for recharging once on the other side.

I realize the screen isn't the biggest, but it seems this negative might be offset by the small size and relative durability.

I've never sat down and watched movies on mine until it ran out of batteries, but I recall reading on Penny Arcade that the battery lasted about 5 hours or about long enough for 2 movies? Something to that affect. If its something you think would work well for you, there are accessory battery packs available, some say they offer longer life, I dont know if they do or not. But the batteries arent that large and are simple enough to switch in and out (its a single unit not many pieces) so if you had 2 charged batteries you should be able to watch 3-5 movies depending on how long the movies were. Again I havent tested this, but it seems about right.

The PSP is a great gaming device for sure. We have one at work, but we have never tested movies on it though. If you want the device just to play movies, a portable DVD player might be a better (and cheaper) choice.

I won one in a raffle. I have to admit I don't hate it as much as I was expecting to. the movies are pricey though. my strategy has been to only buy movies that I don't have to catch all of to enjoy. comedies, mindless action flicks etc. the memory stick only business is annoying.

I've had my PSP since summer of last year and I use mine for games, manga (jpgs), and anime. I use PSPVideo9 to do the conversion. I'm very happy with the quality, portability, and battery life. I think I get around 6 hours of battery life. Sony has released an extended battery (2200 mah vs 1800 mah) in non-US markets, so hopefully it will be released here soon.

I got a MadCatz 4xAAA battery pack for those situations where I have access to standard batteries but not an outlet. I also have a Javosync USB charger cable that lets me charge it up from any PC or laptop.

A few days ago I got a Fotochute 20gb portable hard drive. It's pretty small and offers USB On The Go. Basically, it can act as a host. With a USB cable, I can connect my PSP directly to the Fotochute and copy files back and forth. Excellent for carrying another 20gb of videos to watch. :)

Feel free to ask any more questions. :)

Thanks, Skyline.

Just out of curiousity, approximately how much memory space does a typical 90 minute movie require in the PSP format?

I got to do a teardown on one of those for a client last year (yes, they paid me to take a PSP apart!) and I've gotta tell you that it's an impressive product. I would love to see te factory where it's built. I was seriously impressed with the technology and also with the excellent quality.

I use my PDA (axim x50v) to play movies which has double the res of the PSP and you can buy a microdrive for it so you can store loads more movies, you can also do some work too, oh and browse the web and go on bladeforums, oh and you can play games and roms (ps1, gba, snes, genesis...) plus loads more stuff

The batteries will last a lot longer playing emulators ie old nintendo, snes etc that are on memory and dont require spinning a disc which makes a pretty big difference.

Depends on the quality of the video and audio that you want. I've been encoding at AVC Q20 with 192kbps audio and 23 minutes uses about 75-80MB. A 90 minute movie should require around 320MB.

How's the battery life when watching a movie? My PSP plays about 6 hours of movies per charge. Also, the PSP offers stereo speakers compared to a mono speaker under the keys in the Axim. True, the PSP speakers are rather small and not especially loud, but the stereo pair definitely makes a difference.

I also can play music, games, and surf the web on the PSP. Games are a lot more fun on the PSP than on a PDA.

Yea mines about 6 hours too with the extended battery, i use headphones when i watch movies so i get stereo too

Surfing the web on the PSP is just not worth the effort, the games are not more fun they just have better graphics, most of them are ports of PS2 games and you need at least 30mins to sit down and play it, on the pda you can play quick games when your bored or waiting for something, you can even play games with graphics just as good as the psp's, check out these games:
Virtual Pool Mobile from Celeris x50v version is the one i have
Quake 3 Arena from Noctemware
Obulis from IonFx
Another great thing is there is loads of freeware apps and games
IMO the psp is only good for playing games the pda will beat it at everything else

I have one, bought it with the anticipation of hacking it so that I could play all my old Nintendo and SNES games on it. (Roms aren't illegal if you actually own the hard copy of the game same as CDs) Found out the version of the PSP that I bought was unhackable at the time of purchase. I managed to buy one game for it but the games are very pricey ($40-60 a game). I did pick up a few movies for it, and for the most part they are the same price as any other DVD you would go to the store to pick up. The screen is beautiful, I love the resolution and hardly ever notice a blur on fast motion (LCDs are problematic at best with screen blur on fast motion) The sound is not near loud enough, speakers are about .5" in size and located on the bottom of the unit right where your hands end up, but with a good set of headphones this is easily overlooked. The screen is horrible to watch in bright areas, you'll get glare and reflections off every bright surface you're near, but they make anti-glare screen protectors for the thing that cost around $8.00 that are awesome fixes to the glare problem. Watching movies on UMD is the easiest way to drain down the batteries, you will be able to watch about 4 hours of continuious movies and the battery will run flat, but they make every kind of charger and backup battery system imaginable to fix this problem including cases, attachable booster battery hand grips, emergency power supplies, and anything else you could possibly think of to cover this. The memory cards for the PSP are the Sony proprietary Memory Stick DUO, they are small, and they are expensive (almost twice the price of SD cards) and some of them are not compatable with the PSP. However, some hong kong website (liksang I think) has a nifty little memory card converter that attaches to the UMD door on the back of the PSP which will allow you to use almost any memory card you have with it. Datel has even built a 4 Gig hard drive for the PSP that plugs in and covers up the memory card slot that also comes with a double capacity battery. Both of these attach to the back of the PSP and serve as grips for those of you with large hands.

As you can see, almost every little quirk or complaint about the PSP has been dealt with via some kind of accessory. I actually have 12 movies and 2 games for it now, along with some high end sony headphones, and the screen protector. I have a 256Meg mem card in it. I have found a bunch of websites dedicated to hacking it, have hacked mine and loaded up all my old favorites from NES/SNES. I carry it around with my favorite music, my old games, and a few podcasts and / or the occasional porn clip all stored on the memory card in a handy little bag with 8 discs, FM transmitter (hell with headphones, in the car I use the radio), headphones, remote, screen wipes, and a car charger. My next accessory for it will be either the SD card adaptor or the datel hard drive.

All in all, it's a wicked lil multimedia device.

What do you guys think about the following software. Among other things, it supposedly allows you to transfer your own DVD movies onto the duo memory sticks for viewing on your PSP. There are others out there, but I was drawn to this one as the software is also compatible with Macs (which I obviously own):

Pretty sure that's a scam, unfortunately. So far, I haven't seen any really good software for converting DVDs for the PSP that has any support for selecting multiple audio / subtitle tracks. The closest I've seen is www.dvdcatalyst.com, but it kept crashing on me when I tried the demo.

PSPVideo9 or one of the other free tools is your best choice for now. This guide (while a bit yucky) does show you how to convert DVDs (choice of one audio track):

Thanks Skyline. Do you know if the mobiledeviant shareware is Mac compatible?
