Any thoughts on CS 1917 Cutlass?

Does anyone actually own one of these. I know that cold steel stuff is usually well built, and at only $200 it sounds like a good deal.

I didn't hear too much about it...but the overall synopsis was negative I recall. Wish I could help more.

Its a bit on the heavy side, ok for cleaving though. If I'd were to use it during an "unpleasantness" I'd get that sucker swinging, and attack. Start your moulinet, and don't stop until everyone's on the ground missing pieces-parts, or runs away in terror.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I may pick one up sometime in the future when I actually have money, unless someone can convince me not too. Schlager, I plan on it making my home defense piece, so if any "unpleasantness" finds it's way to my house I'll use your advice

I admire the spirit but for home defense might I suggest a pistol instead of a sword?

A gun is always better, Triton, but there are many among us who, for whatever reason, either cannot or will not own a firearm.

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

Razoredj is right. If I could own one I would, but unfortunately it's impossible in my situation.

A baseball bat would be a better idea IMO than that particular blade. If you want something bladed...a good machete will have an advantage. If you want something more swordlike, consider saving your money for something good. Del Tin Falchion would be much better than the cold steel cutlass, as would the Falcata. A Kris Cutlery wakizashi, celtic sword, or gladius would be other ideas or even a Criswell short sword.

Seriously, a sword is not an ideal weapon for home defense. But if you insist on getting a sword, and your excuse is the safety of you and your family, you should have the good taste to get something a little better than the CS Cutlass.

-Addendum-

The reason for this negative opinion of it is because I got a pretty good look at one recently and some more outside opinions were provided.

I do take my collecting seriously, in the sense that I always search for the best quality and what suits me most. However, This particular piece would probably never get used(hopefully). If by chance it did, I would not mind it getting confiscated. In my opinion a baseball bat is a good choice for a non lethal weapon, but if an intruder with obviously bad intentions enters the place where my family sleeps, God help them. I will look at the pieces you suggested though as other options.

I'm not trying to spit in the face of sword collectors, it's just that right now I have a tight budget. If I didn't I'd definitely buy this piece from Don Fogg:

Just as an aside, Don doesn't make katana for custom orders anymore...your best bet from him would be to see if he's got anything completed from the classes he teaches or if he makes one once in a while.

I'm not saying the other models I mentioned are custom pieces by any stretch, but for the price you're getting something good at least as far as DT and KC stuff...

Lots of options in the sub-300 range to look at. I'm just trying to help.

I do appreciate the suggestions. It's too bad Don doesn't take any orders anymore. I tried to get this but wasn't quick enough.

I know it went for $550 but damn!

I preferred his Osoraku-Zukuri tanto that he made...even I like some of that non-traditional stuff (gasp! looks at shocked faces). Though it's still more traditional than most

He's a fantastic maker.

PS: I suggest you go to Albion Armorers ( http://www.albionarmorers.com ) and browse through the Del Tin line of swords they carry. Also look for a Pompeii Gladius I think it's called, which I heard is a fantastic little sword with a blade by Angus Trim, who's purdy popular for making some of the nicest production user-swords around.
