Does anyone own a Schrade Switch-It or a Schrade Outback? What are your thoughts on them? I'm familiar with their Old Timer and Uncle Henry traditional pocket knives, however, their move towards modern thermoplastic folders have been dissapointing like the Cliphanger and Lake and Walker knives. How are the Outback and Switch-It models?

The knife handle had too much give to it when gripping hard and the blades lockup wasn't tight enough for my likings. Overall it just didn't look quality made! This is from what my thought about it was only, may not be exactly yours though.

I had the Outback and i thought it was a good knife. The only problems I had with it were the lock-up was TOO tight. You had to really push hard to release the lock. The handle is also really thick (too thick for me and it fatigued my hand when cutting with it).

Schrade makes some really ouystanding traditional style knives. Also most of their standard fixed blades are great knives. However, there "modern" style knives are some real losers. The Walkers I examined are poorly made and not worth even half the price they charge.

The outback had potential but was poorly executed. If a knife in that "class" is what you are looking for, try a Gerber Gator (much better knife).

The cliphanger??....dont even get me started on that POS :p

I recently picked up my second UH 171. This is a fixed blade, compact bowie in 1095. I believe it is 1095 since there is no "+" on the tang indicating it is stainless. This is an older knife but incredible. The thick delrin stag handle fools nearly all the non knife nuts. The blade sharpens better than most knives. Truly incredible as are the Old Timer series.....

And then Schrade throws out some nasty junk like the Cliffhanger which if you think about that knife is exactly where it belongs....over a cliff. I guess they are going after the cheap seekers but even Bucks cheaper knives are still well made. There are some older Schrades out there that are just incredible....and others I wouldn't touch if you paid me. Go figure.

Schrade does make good traditional folders. I have an Uncle Henry signature stockman and an Old Timer carbon steel stockman, and both are very well made for their price range. I have bought the Cliphanger and the Lake & Walker 2, only to be dissapointed, but I've never owned the Outback or their Switch-It or their Beast. From what I've heard, the Beast is not much better than the Cliphanger. :barf:

What I like about the cliphanger is you can replace the locking tab with reynolds wrap and you end up with a stronger knife. Beast is a cliphanger in disguise.
