A lot of our favorite budget brands that make traditionals also have "straight razors" or straight razor style knives available, by all accounts they are obviously not or were never meant to be used for shaving but do they, can they, will they still make serviceable knives?

I don't think most of them would hold up to regular knife duties too well. Traditionally, straight razors like that one were ground very thin, so as to give you that razor edge. The edge would be very prone to rolling if used as a pocket knife.

I wonder why they would waste the materials they could have made 2 or even 3 knives with then? Luckily I do not have much invested.

i have a straight razor knife, it was a novelty at best from united cutlery. it was interesting i guess, i really wanted a quality straight razor at the time. eventually bought a pakistani razor at a street fair. turns out they dont really shave. its a rough edge at best. your money can be better spent else where if you really want one to shave with, like a dovo

Certainly don't want to shave with one haha, if I did I would have saved the many turn of the century ones I've picked over the years, If I find another old one I should probably keep it just because, yeah the only reason I picked up the crowing rooster was because it had the old box design same as one of my knives, I assume they are on par with Rough Rider could be wrong though.

Friction Folders are knives that operate like straight razors. Guys like Nighthaxan (check out the knifemaker's subforum) make them that even resemble straight razors with some of the blade designs. He calls them "higos", short for Higonokami, which is the Japanese traditional friction folder.

When I see those, my mind runs immediately to Terry Southern's ott classic, Razor Fight..

I have a real straight razor - a boker edelweiss. Shaves like a dream. I find it weird that straight razors not intended for shaving exist... very peculiar.

Yeah I have some Higonokami's.

blame that kids movie with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter something about a demon barber? though it is beyond me as well that some one thought it was a marketable idea

I think the idea predates that movie haha.

a straight razor as a knife of course, that 90 degree. Ive seen it in Sin City used for other intentions besides shaving.
I hope I can find a use for this cheap piece of steel that could have been turned into a nice cheap stockman or something else much more useful. :D

I shave regularly with a straight razor, and would never use it for anything else! Unless you want a friction folder like mentioned above I would go with one of the many traditional knife patterns like a congress:thumbup:

I think I've already got a congress in the collection haha, as I've said though I don't think this piece of metal was ever meant to shave with, into the abyss it shall go I guess, unless I ever go crazy like Albert Brooks on Drive.

I want a Rough Rider straight razor. It should make a nice "period correct" patch knife for my black powder rifles. (I don't shave.)

Ever noticed in olden day photos of frontier type blokes how they all have huge beards?
Mostly because they didn't have a microsurgeon on board to stitch them up.
