Hi-
I've got a plain edge Goddard C18 Jr.(mid sized one) that I will take to the grave with me, I hope. I really like it's styling and overall functionality for real world tasks.(well, at least my real world, ymmv)
If it's of any help, here's a breakdown of the Spyderco/Goddard models(please correct me if I'm in error)
C16: largest model,(3 3/4" blade) was available in Micarta, now discontinued, still some around. Offered only in ComboEdge, GIN-1 steel. Still available is the C16 Lightweight which is the same large size, but has a Zytel handle and ATS-55 for the blade steel. Offered mainly in ComboEdge, but there was a limited 500 or so piece run of the PlainEdge-d versions. These can still be had through a couple of dealers I know of.
C18: The Goddard Jr., as it was called was originally available in Micarta and with the ComboEdge only. Smaller than the C16,(2 7/8" blade) it also had GIN-1 stainless. This is also now discontinued. However, true Goddard fans like myself can still get a Ltd. Edition plain edged Jr. from the Goddards directly. Numbered and engraved by Wayne, with a cool zipper pouch, too!
C20: Baby Goddard, still available, Micarta handle with no pocket clip. 1 1/2" blade. Obviously the smallest, but a knice knife regardless. I believe these are only done in ComboEdge, but I could be wrong. At least I've never seen a PlainEdge one.
I definitely recommend the Jr. If you can pick one up. It's got great ergos and good for household work. The big C16 is nice, too but I think it would work best for those with larger hands. The C16 Lightweight with the deeply textured Zytel handle offers more grip than the smooth Micarta, although the handle on all of them has a forward "guard" built in. Especially for the prices that can be found on a Goddard Lightweight, you can hardly go wrong.
Oh, and ALL of the above knives in their various configurations can still be had through the Goddards themselves.
Hope I didn't bore ya'
