I have set of sharpmaker diamond rods on the way. I intend to use them on knives that have got dull as the standard medium rods take to long for jobs like that.

I can't find much info on how to use the diamond rods.

Do you use the corners then flats just like the brown and white rods?

Any special method to clean the diamond rods?

Any other tips for the diamond rods?

thanks

Yes, you use them the same way that you use the ceramic rods. Hints:

1) Keep your pressure very light. As in, "the weight of the blade only" light. Especially when using the corners. The diamonds are the hardest substance we have at present. They WILL abrade the steel at the lightest contact you can manage. Let them do their job. Too much pressure will rock the diamonds, causing them to cut their way out of the nickel plating used to attach them to the steel base.

2) It is even more important to end your strokes with the tip of the blade still in contact with the rod. The diamond abrasive will remove the sharp point at the tip of the blade faster than it removes steel from the edge bevel (Murphy's Law).

Clean them the same way you clean the ceramic rods. They won't load up as fast as the brown rods do.

Well, the first advice you missed - I don't recommend them since as yablanowitz mentioned the diamonds come out.

The only thing I can add to yablanowitz's post is that for cleaning, simply wiping with paper towels is sufficient to clean them.

Thanks for the replies

I'll take care to try and avoid the diamonds coming out.
