Any tips on treating Bruises

Since the request for help with pop ups worked so great, I figured Id see if anyone here had tips for treating Bruises. Besides tar and feathers, and banning of course :p :D ;)

Anyways, invariably every week I get hit in the hands. New students and all, trying to re-inforce some positivity in their training experience, I smile say its alright keep trying. But my hand is really starting to hurt from repeated battering. I know the best solution would be to stop training till I heal properly, but without my weekly doses stick swinging I would probably go mad as a hatter. Anyways, Ive tried icing, hot pads, ben-gay, dit da jow, Bromelain, and aspirin. Ive seen the best results from the jow, the ben-gay second. Icing provides temprorary relief, but doesnt seem to help things heal any faster. So does anyone else have any tips for making things better.

Frederico,
I had an Aunt who swore by "meat tenderizer" for healing bruises. She said that it always worked for her. I only tried it once myself (when I spent a week with her during the summer when I was a kid) and it seemed to work?

get some gauntlets, or at least the padded top of the hand sparring gloves. They keep the palm open, and they're easy to get used to.

For WMA, we use rattan staffs to represent the swords, and in many cases a knucklebow or other basket hilt is used. For danish axe, pole arm, spear, great sword, bastard sword, you can get by with plate reinforced hockey gloves (course, we're talking big sticks moving fast here). These would probably reduce your ability to manipulate the stix fer your purposes, tho.

wear boxing gloves??? or pads or something. My instructor was always nursing a bruise, too. Until he started letting some of his uke's take the heat :D I've played that part too.

Lacrosse gloves are lighter and more flexible than hockey gloves. The problem about getting hit in the hands a lot is that eventually you might damage a knuckle.

When I get a bruise I squish it out. I use a thumb or finger and starting from the middle, press and roll it to the outside of the bruise and further out. Sort of like if you had an air bubble under a sheet of saran wrap on the table top.

Here's my reasoning. A bruise is goop and other stuff left by an injury. By kneading and working it back into the rest of the body, you get added circulation and you move the goop into a larger surface area to be reabsorbed by your body.

When I've done this the redness and swelling seem to go away quicker.

I have this leech theory that I've been wanting to try out for awhile...

When I want to treat Bruise, I usually toss him a straight line...

Gently, firmly stroke the skin from beyond the bruise
toward, over, and past the bruise
toward the heart.

(same as b.l. suggests, just less squishy.)

Massage new blood toward,
& pooled stale blood past
the bruise area.

not magic,
but it helps.

Nasty, to him, the world is just one, big straight line anyway. No special treatment required. I, for one, like him just fine that way.

Arnica Montana gel
is the best stuff.. bruises, strains, sprains, swelling
Available in health food, heck I even got it at ShopRite Food Supermarket.
Made by Boiron . It's a homeoapatic treatment.
I popped my knee and used this as Ibuprofen didn't touch the swelling anymore.
This really works and is part of my BOB, psk and always have some around with me.

I also use the tablets.

Dimethylsulfoxide:google it first and see if it is what you want.

Just be very careful that your hands are completely clean before application as what ever is on them will be taken into the bloodstream immediately.

Ditto skin applied to
and tools/materials used.

And I understand the cheap stuff is industrial grade
(not medical grade)
and may have it's own contaminants to beware.
Don't know if there is a separate veterinary grade

Double check your sources for quality/QC.

Been using this for years. Never found anything better and I've tried loads of other stuff, including some truely foul-smelling homemade stuff.

For Bruisee, I think he is beyond medical aid... :)

Dit Da Jow works great. Try www.shaolin.com. If you want to make your own you can get kits from www.dragons.bigstep.com. But remember the longer it ferments the better.

ddean, Do you always write in Haiku?

A 35 year old guy I worked with decided he wanted to learn judo.

Twice a week he'd come into the office complaining about the 18 year olds who threw him from one side of the dojo to the other all night long.

He recommended ONE aspirin before the injury occurred. Said it thinned the blood and reduced not only the bruising, but also the after-practice aches and pains.

dunno. YMMV

And I was instructed by my sifu to rub in DitDaJow with strokes toward the heart.

I think bloodletting also thins the blood

after fluid replacement

try Red Cross

Dit da jow is best, but rub the bruise when you apply it. Put pressure only "upwards" toward the trunk of the body or "upwards" towards the head when bruises occur on the trunk itself. You want to engage the lymphatic system--putting pressure the wrong way forces the system to work harder.

The faster the bruise turns red, the faster it heals.

Thanks for the recommendations all. Ive been using the jow, with a little hilot style message for a while, and it sounds like that will be the best I can hope for in making things heal fast. Anyways, once again thanks for all the help, my hand is functioning now, and will be up to getting hit in this weeks sparring session. After which I will be back a the drawing board. But perhaps if I use Bruise as a Human shield.....   :p :footinmou
