I know these are typically used by geologists, and for other professionals requiring extreme accuracy. However, their quick dampening, accuracy and bulletproof designs seem to make them a good choice for woods use to.

I have been using a Cammenga Military lensatic compass for years, and have absolutely no complaints. However, there is something about the transit compasses that I find fascinating.

So, does anyone use them for their woods bumming?

I like transit compasses and use them a lot in exploration work, but when I am climbing, or mountaineering, I don't want to carry the weight and use a regular brunton compass or my gps. although I don't like the battery life of the gps, the compass is much more battery friendly.

I have used a Brunton for over 40 years. As a geologist we used them for rough surveys. It is a big precision compass, rugged, water resistant and very accurate. I think they are going now for about $200. I would not use it for ordinary woods use. Normally when hiking I now carry a Silva Ranger 15T. This is accurate enough for hiking and other activities.
