I'm sure pullrich has done a few, search his posts. You may find it in the modding trail hawks thread.

Best regards

Robin

and do be sure to read through the full 'mod'ing CS trailhawk' thread because a number of others like bryfry comment on their techniques and they get great results.

What I do now is coat the hawk head with 4-5 good coats of black spraypaint, then pencil my designs on mostly by freehand. Then I use my dremmel stylus to remove the paint, following the pencil design.

Another way is to clean your piece to be etched VERY well with soap and water then Isopropyl alcohol, then using a fine sharpie pen, and with out touching the piece with your hands, draw what you want on the piece. Next set it in a bath of warm white vinegar from 4-6 hours. pull it ou and voila. The vinegar eats everything VERY uniformly except what was under the sharpie ink. so it will be RAISED and not sunken. Just pull it out wash the slime off and buff with 0000 steel wool. and your good to go. Here's an example from a knife in 1095 I entered in the bushcraft over in the WSS sub forum

Very cool Jason. Getting 5 coats of hard paint off steel isn't easy I've found... I always resort to extra strong paint stripper and lose some skin, too. So your idea makes me consider doing my next hawk design in the fashion you outline. I would pencil a fancy design on the steel, then do with the sharpie, and dunk the whole shebang in vinegar or I'll even try etchant.

I've never used pencil so I dont know how that will work. I just free hand mine in sharpie, if I dont like a line I erase it with a q-tip and alcohol.

Jason.

Good point, why bother with pencil guide lines if the sharpie comes offf that easy. One of my concerns is putting on a resist that can deal with etchant. So , I may try your approach but with nail polish.
