Hey guys,

So long story short I got a 8" sharpening stone from a friend of my dads a long time ago and just again found it in my house.
It is two sided, a fine grit and a medium or coarse grit on the other side.
however i have no clue what grits they are.
i kinda wanted to buy a third stone, like a extra fine one, but i of course want to make sure i dont buy either the same one or one that is coarser than my finest side.
I tried to take pictures to upload them but it seemed usless as it is just a black stone and you can hardley make out the apperance.

Any ideas guys??

Quite honestly you really can't tell but if it is fine on one side and coarse on the other you know to go coarse-fine-xf-xxf.
If the stone is black is could be an arkansas(if memory holds).

Yes, a black hard Arkansas but their not twin grit but are very fine . A black, twin grit stone sounds like something not from here . DM

probably an old india or crystolon with years of oil and gunk turning it black. I would get a ~1000 grit as the next finer stone if it is.

alright i got one picture, you can see the line but not really make out the grits, any more helpful???

Yes, had you said grey--ok . That is a SiC crystolon stone probably not a Norton . The softer hardware type stones dish like that . If it is, those sell for 5-10$ your large one is more . Those stone maybe 100 grit on the coarse side and 280 grit on the fine side . If the quality is not good ie. soft and you can see the powder slurry coming off with each stroke . Those won't sharpen the better steels . For Kitchen cutlery maybe . Consider getting a Norton 2X8" India or crystolon stone with two grits, coarse and fine . They'er a good value @ 25$ with shipping to your door . Then should you want a finer stone a Spyderco med. ceramic (same size) is 600 grit . It runs like 50$ plus shipping and be sure to get a leather strop . These should have you well set up . DM

hey thanks alot, i looked it up and as you said the fine is only about 280.

so it looks like ill get a 600, and then a 1000 or 1200 for afterwards.

and i guess to touch it up i would only need to use the 1000/1200

thanks, now to find a store i can get it from, most onlines dont like to ship to canada
