It seems the HI kukris are a solid start especially for the money, but i want a g10 or micarta handle and a kydex sheath, anybody making this stuff aftermarket? Or a comparable brand?

You could always buy a blemished kukri from HI and put a micarta handle on it. A Kydex sheath runs about 85-100 custom made.

If cost is a factor I don't think you're going to have much luck on this; especially if you are talking about retro fitting a HI after market, my guess is it would be possible to 2-3 times the cost of the kukri to refit the handle.

You say you know what he wants, but I know what he needs. :D

That got weird fast!

Get a Cold Steel SK5 Gurkha Kukri. It already has a very good handle, good steel and the best sheath you will find for a kukri. And if the sheath ever breaks you can order another one and it will fit perfectly. They last forever, hold an edge well, easy to sharpen, handles don't break, bolsters and butt plates don't come loose and fall off, the sheaths last forever and are very secure.

Ya, but arent the cold steel kuks thin, if the op is going for more modern than cold steel all the way, otherwise what is your price range?

Check out the Becker Machax. Has the khukuri theme, and it an almost indestructibal beast. Not a traditional khuk, but it has a lot of the features you seem to be looking for.

I'd also recommend the Cold Steel kukri. I've owned a few different kukris including the Busse Killa Zilla and the CS is my fave. Great weight, very good blade shape and the SK5 can take a beating! The balance makes it a great chopper but its still light and agile enough to do different tasks as well. The handle seems to have some hot spots though and I'd recommend gloves for extended use.

The HI kukris are nice but come with some variety of leather sheath and can be beastly heavy and exhausting to use over long periods but will also take a beating... Plus, pretty cheap for what you get. The Busse KZ is prohibitively expensive, heavy , the handle has a hot spot toward the pinky and I felt the factory edge made it more of a bludgeoning tool. Plus , no sheath.

One of my faves is a McCurdy Kukri , which I believe is a custom made HI deal. I think the handle is horn or some very dense wood, great ergos, bomb proof and a very serviceable leather sheath.

Good luck in your quest.

The CS Khukri is 5/16 inch thick. That is about perfect!

I am not the biggest fan of the grip material, but it works and absorbs shock.

I have one of their Machetes and it is 2.75 mm. So their machete's are "thinner", though they do tend to be thick for machete's as well.

To the OP, buy a HI khukri with a full tang, and use the heck out of it. if the handle breaks, replacing full tang handle scales is much easier than with a stick tang. Epoxy, some scale material and sandpaper, and go to town.

Any of the custom kydex benders can whip you up a kydex sheath if you ship your knife to them.

AFAIK, HI has never made the McCurdy. I believe he has them made in Dharan.

Actually, replacing the handle on a stick tang khukuri is easier than a full tang. Less fitting needs to be done.
