I don't know anything about wood, my mom's 50th birthday is coming up (end of February) and I'm looking to get a box made for a knife.

My mom loves character/figure in wood. Bubinga would be awesome, or even koa, but those are pretty expensive. I'm hoping your wood expertise could offer some creativity as well.

Approximate dimensions are 14" x 6" x 2".

If anyone is interested, could you please email me a cost estimate?

Thanks for looking.

If we were in the same country i probably would. I've made a few nice jewelery box's and made my Dad a chess board/box for Christmas.

We don't really carry much figured wood at work. Not always the safest for chairs etc. that need to be structurally sound. Most of the fancy pants stuff id veneered on. I often like the cleaner looks better anyway.

Wow, full wooden hinge. nice. Usually i wouldn't have the inlay come through the bottom of the lid but to each his own. I made my girlfriend a walnut jewelery box with a rock maple Celtic style boarder inlay last year. Pretty similar to that, but just brass hinged. Don't know if i could handle a wooden hinge. :D

I am a woodworker by trade and would like to tell you that I could do it, but my time is pretty well burned for the next few months, so I don't think I can be of much help.

I will say that on the box you pictured, it looks like the hinges are integral to the box itself and mortised together. If this is a feature you want, expect to pay for it. If metal hinges are acceptable then you might specify this, it could make a substantial price difference.

I'm fine either way. I like the look of the integral hinge, but a nice metal hinge would be just as good.

Contact Phillip Dobson here on the forums. He makes excellent wood boxes of all types. He uses some very fine and exotic materials and some very innovative hinge ideas. You won't be disappointed with his work. I can't speak for his time frame or how busy he is.

Here's a link to his website with pictures of some of the boxes he makes. Should be able to find contact info here too.

I also vote for Phillip.
In my opinion his boxes are museum quality and he is reasonable with his prices. He's a nice guy too.
That is if you can catch him between ice climbing and other death defying thrill seeker activities.

If you go with Phillip for the boxmaking and want to use bubinga have Phillip contact me and I will donate the wood.

Just let me know.
Mark
