Hey everyone,

Well, seeing as how I cannot afford an XBox 360 these days, I picked up a copy of WoW at Walmart last night. I've heard a ton of stuff about it over the years and most of the fellow geeks in my computer program play it.

Anyone here at the cantina a WoW player? Any advice before I start this thing up (it is still in the box on my desk). What are the best characters to be? Is it really as addicting as I was told?

Thanks,

Alan

I like it pretty well, but my son likes it a lot more. I got through about 3/4 of it and got bored.

There is a lot to reccomend in it-
This is for your computer? Try getting a copy of Sacred- all the Bugs are worked out and both my son and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I played it to finish many times.

Diablo is still good.

I would definately buy WOW again- but I was slightly disapointed. I got tired of building villages and haveing them destroyed. I wasn't crazy about my main character turning pure evil, nor about the only character choice in the expansion, a scantily clothed woman.

I understand the online gaming community loves this game, and you have real character choice there.

Alan,

Do you mean the online version? I have two characters that are stalled at level 18. Just don't have the time to play now that I don't work for Apple anymore.(I'd play after work on our super fast connection with a fast computer) At home my computer is a little sluggish and I just can't get into it as much anymore. I'm actually thinking about canceling my subscription.

Tips

1. Do all the quests you can, you'll level faster and get goodies.
2. Make sure you join the same server as your friends. Have one of your friends send you some money via the mailbox at inns and big cities(banks) This will help you level.
3. Go solo until level 10 at least or temporarily join groups fro a specific scenario.

If it's the regular Warcraft, I agree with Munk. Hate the resource building, just want to kill stuff.

Yep, this is the online computer version by Blizzard Ent. They just had an expansion pack released too.

Ted, I'm going to be playing on an old Pismo 400... at least until I can afford a new laptop. I'm on a decent cable connection, I'm I going to be sucking wind?

Thanks for the advice on leveling. I was looking over the site last weekend trying to decide on characters and thought a hunter would be cool to start out with. I'll see once I actually get going.

Crap... just started to install the program and got his with an insufficient computer resources error... the danged thing needs at least a 990Mhz G4 processor and 32MB VRAM video card :(

I thought it was fishy they didn't have system requirements on the box... I'm going to give a shot anyway, but I know I'm really going to be sucking wind with only 8 MB VRAM in my little Pismo.

I don't think it'll work. The action will freeze on you.

I"m sorry. I hate electronic screws. I ordered Sacred about 8 'fixes' before anything was fixed; trying to play that is a exercise in pathos.
But it is fixed now.

You know, there a slew of great Sword and sorcery games....go to one of those sites where all the people without a life play and talk about what's good. (when they're not on HI forum of course.)

If you can find Heretic 11 you may be able to play it, though the graphics aren't up to today's standards. My son and I agree though; we like good games and are less impressed with great visuals, especially if the plot and development are weak.

I'm really afraid you're going to have a problem. There must be used computers cheap that will play this stuff.

Wanna hear my Max Paine story? We don't play it. At all. There it was; highly reccomended by all the gamers, and to us it was one meaningless gun battle after another- and the kills are rebroadcast in slo mo- you know, for all of us who still miss the original Mod squad, or any Quinn Martin production.

Max Paine - love it. at least until I got stuck in the restaurant. I finally found my way out, but died and never played again. Mindless gun battles are second only to slaying hordes of zombies.:D

BTW he's on a Mac, so choices for games are kinda limited. especially an older one like he has.

True, but most the good games are translated into Mac.

as for Paine, how Ted, how?? The bad guys fall in slow motion...and it took time..I had to watch this and think: 'yeah, here's a good use of the memory on my machine.."

I love killing Zombies, like Doom, but at least I'm going somewhere in that game. I asked a gamer about it once. "Well, eventually there's a plot>"
The only thing about Doom is there's not much light....flashlights are apparently a lost art in the future.. Or as one reviewer said; "You mean in the future you can't find any duct tape and tape the flash to the weapon??"

Yep... confirmed. WoW won't work on my old Pismo. I hit the Play button...screen goes black... music plays... and that is it. Nada. Damn I need a new computer. I really want a new Intel Mac so I can run my computer class programs (windoz lab simulations), but will still run my mac software too. But I'm beginning to think I might just need to get a cheap PC... but one that'll be fast enough for WoW.

im on diablo II :)
originally a gift for my nephews... but they didnt like it :grumpy:
it was funny... they didnt even open it and immediately rejected the gift
"SPOILED" so im playing now instead of them :)

I remember playing all the way through Doom one night and being really pissed off at the end... it was rather a disappointment. But it was fun getting there.

I've got to be careful on those first person shooter games. I tend to get motion sick when running around too fast. Castle Wolfenstein really did me in when it first came out :barf:

Get a Mac Mini with the Intel chip and 2 GB of RAM. It's about $850, but you'll need a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It'll even run Aperture, which nothing I have will. Hell, I might get one and sell you my old Mac Mini.

Thanks Ted. I've used Mini's before and they are fun and will handle a surprising amount of work. But I think I'd get more bang for the buck with a iMac (better processor/video card/hardrive, etc).

BUT... what I do want a Mini for (future) is for my entertainment center! :D
NO AppleTV for me... give me the Mini and I'll use it to download tv shows, movies, etc., right into my "system." Actually, I don't have a "system" yet, but I will shortly after I get a job somewhere. The Mini is perfect for this task, whereas the AppleTV will only stream movies, etc. from a computer. NO storeage, etc. I'd rather have a Mini :D

That's what my computer classmates said too... Maybe it is a blessing that I only have a seven year old computer right now :)

Aye, the Minis are a sweet little box. I wish I had made the jump from PC to Mac YEARS ago.
Not to say that I didn't play some sweet games on PC though.
